Found a Cummins 5.9bt for sale

I was at napa today getting my part for the doghead relay (for $16!) and chatted with the guys there and was talking about steelsoldiers.com.

one of the chaps there used to own a civvy 85 diesel blazer and I was pushing him to get a CUCV. In short, he said, he is in the process of selling things, his garage went out of business and he is now working at Napa. Along with this, he told me, since you like trucks etc, I am selling a 5.9bt cummins for $1000 with the pump and after prompting, said he would help with install since he had all the tools and lift. As a caveiat - He struck me as a decent fellow.

I know they are great engines - looked them up in the crate prices and they are not cheap.

Thoughts on putting in a cummins to the cucvs?

I am still debating it and discussing with the wife. If i chose not to go for it, I will help anyone that likes to get the engine.

If it were me, a built 47RH coupled to a NP205. The adapters can be had from the first gen Dodge Ram (Pre-93). A 47RH can be built to handle more than a TH400, bolts up in place, and has an OD. The main concerns would be crossmember and a little wiring.

Just something to ponder.
The swap is not that bad providing you get all the accessories and mounts from a donor truck.
If it a 12 valve engine there easier because of less electronics.
You will also need an OD type Trans. and a change the diff. ratio's for sure.
There is a lot more to it than just an engine.
I did a 6BTA in my K 30 and run the 400 turbo with 3.73.
Pulls like a locomotive, but at 62 mph it's against the governor.

Thanks to Timber, Patracy, and TGP(IL)

I am going to go pick up the relay tomorrow and talk to this fellow to get all the details of the engine type - simple is better imho (which may mean I leave the 6.2 alone).

I fell into this and will determine if it is a good deal for me (and if not then for someone on SS I hope). I have always heard the cummins engines are impressive and durable - with less susceptability on the block cracking -

I don't drive my M1008 over about 55 really and more to 50-53 at the moment. 62 would be shocking!

No, that is incorrect. An NV4500 is the correct answer. :D

I'm partial to the 47R transmission. I've got a billet 47RE in my dodge.

Just goofing around, manual all the way. Any towing, or a lot of off roading, automatic wins.

NV4500's also require a lot of fab work for the clutch peddle. And they also need the 5th gear nut "fixed".

If your gonna do it, do it right. Get a NV5600 out of a junker.
uh....ick. There about as sweet as a dodge automatic.

4500's are not that hard to stuff in a cucv behind a 5.9
Use a hydro peddle from a chevy and a little bit of fab work to a 2000ish dodge clutch master cyl and your good to go.

Patracy, I have to ask. Why would you say an auto for towing? That is the #1 place I would definatly not want an auto.

Also, You guys know alot about dodge 47r's, Whats needed to run a 47rh in all speeds w/ a functinal lockup

Don't quote me but it is 3 or 5 wires and you can use a switch for lock up.
