My new M923 doesn't have its date of manufacturer stamped on its dataplates, which may have been replaced at time of overhaul. GL says it's a 1984 AM General truck, but I hope that you can verify that before I request my SF97.

a. Serial number C52306860
b. Registration number NL0J3C
c. NSN 2320010502084
d. GL via Barstow DRMO
e. No bumper numbers. Appears to be overhauled then not re-issued?

Thanks in advance!

Oh wise and munificient CARNAC, I have a conundrum for you. My 1972 M35A2, which you have already identified to the 835th engineers, ND NG has a rather odd identification code underneath the last coat of paint applied by the 835th. The number/letter combination is a follows: WPIETO D0008. It is on the front bumper, the tailgate, both doors and on the left and right hand sides of the bed. What in the world did this one come from? Seems like it's the 8th one out of ?? but what...???

I don't think the information provided is correct. There should be a different number on the drivers side front wheel well frame.
I found NO numbers stamped into the frame on the drivers side at all. Just that one number stamped into the frame on the passenger side. I think the second to last pic is the "bumper number", but not sure. I also have this faded scanner tag that they had JUST started using when I got out. I'll blow it up on the computer and see if I can make out the numbers. My eyes are not what they used to be.

Semper Fi Marine! Looks like a Marine Corps truck to me. If it is, the 6 digit number is the truck BuNo or in plain English, it's Bureau Number. All equipment in my time in the Marine Corps had a six digit number. For example the BuNo on one of our CH-53A's was 153285. It's "bumper number" though that's not what we called them was MS 485. Both the stamped number and the painted number on the side of your truck are the same so I'm 99% sure that's what that number is. As to the other number M21580; at least I think that's what it says, is a unit assigned number. The BuNo never changes no matter what unit it is assigned to. The other number will change any time it gets permenantly assigned to different units. You'll have to do some digging but just a WAG says that truck belonged to the 21st Marines and it is truck number 580. Can't put any faith in that, I'm an Air Winger. That ground stuff was never in my sight picture (except on the live fire range) We just hauled them where ever they wanted to go.

Thanks for the heads up. I did try some digging and found absolute JACK so far. A detective, I am not. Then I turned to my new digital camera! I turned it all the way up and took a few pics of the faded scanner tag on the bumper. After blowing it up and playing with the contrast on the computer I was able to pull a few numbers.
Oh great and mighty Carnac....or anyone else for that matter.... Do these numbers help or mean anything?

DTID: M215903167E196
NSN:2320000508842

This is the numbers I gave earlier:
Nat. Stock No. 2320000508954
Ord. Service No. 8736854
Id no. 565009 (I also found this number stamped in the frame)
Cont. No. M0002787c0022

I notice I came up with a different nsn number off the tag. They cant both be right can they?
