HMMWV's
Hello all,
Just joined the site, I'm an LEO (and retired military), our agency just received a HUMMWV from the LESO office. We received a 1995 M1025A2 slant back, it has 5100 miles and seems mechanically sound, an Army mechanic we had look at it after we got it said it had all the mods it's supposed to and PM seemed to be current. The only issues so far are the heater box cover and venting are missing, the heater works and we rigged a temp fix with some home heater ducting and PVC pipe (I know that will upset the purists), but we needed heat and defrost. We've already used the vehicle during the last snowfall. Also the transmission seems to be leak when it gets really cold, I've checked the levels per the -10 and it reads just short of full when at temp.
As with many here we are doing this on a shoestring budget, we do not have a 4x4 vehicle and it was relatively easy to convince the city council on a very rugged 4X4 vehicle at a very low cost (notice I didn't say free) . We plan on using the vehicle mainly for snow, flooding, post storm clean-up and other emergencies where a normal police vehicle would have trouble or be damaged during the response. Additionally because of the cargo capacity we are going to put our critical incident response equipment in it and use it as a response vehicle, and as a show piece for special events. The local vocational school is going to paint it (they and I are aware of the CARC issues), it won't be all glossy but a decent usable vehicle.
I've done some reading here before I joined, I've always been a MV enthusiast and there seems to be (among some here) a bit of hostility toward the LE community getting these vehicles. Most agencies are going to use them in roles similar to ours, it provides a capability at a relatively low cost, and that is a value for the taxpayer (remember we are tax payers too). I understand the frustration with the demil requirement of the HUMMWV fleet, hopefully that will change but who knows.
Anyone with suggestions or tips for the 1025A2 please respond to the thread or send me a message.
Cheers.......
