LDS427 Multifuel

Well, a member here had an LDS427 for sale. The price was right for parts so I grabbed it. It is siezed and missing parts, but there is still good stuff to be had. One of the best things is the manual starter! I hate arcing a screw driver across the solenoid terminals to turn a motor over, now I don't have to worry about it! Also, I noticed the water pump is different. It has the water "J" pipe bolted to it, rather than sliding a hose on like the LDT. It also has the old 25amp generator on it, I guess I'll have to figure out how to test this thing now. Anyhoo, here is a couple pics for everyone to see.LDS427 starter.jpgLDS427 water pipe.jpg

I do too. It will be the one that stays with the motor test stand(bottom half of a multifuel can) I have.

Now I have to dig out the 25amp regulator I have stashed somewhere to see if they all work.

Wait, you mean I have a manual starter sitting in my vise on my work bench?

Ray, when that lever is moved, the lever pushes the starter drive assembly forward to engage the flywheel, at the same time it closes the contact for the electric to spin the starter.

Maybe I shouls see if SWB can post a video when I get up there later.

An old salt once told me the reason the military retained the manual bendix even when solenoid versions were available is that in extreme cold, when cranking amps are critical, the manual starter uses less energy and could get a marginally charged truck running, while a solenoid starter would just chatter. Any truth to this?

That makes sense, but I suspect technology of the time was also as much a factor in design.
