M998 HMMWV - V Belt part numbers?

I recently brought home my M998 (1988 with 6.5) and started the search for Part Number equivalent I can pick up at O'reilleys or Autozone.

My V-Belt tension is tight however there is still slack when the engine is running (belts may be dry rotted). Does anyone know of the V-Belt Part # Equivalent to pick up at a local parts store for 6.5 Liter?

Just as a FYI. the v belt on a hmmwv do "dance" while the engine is running.

I put aftermarket on mine but I just looked and the part numbers are worn off the belts. I do know they were a delco part though. I think we used the belts from a 1993 h1 without AC but one set was too short or something.

Lets see it is a M998 so the parts TM will be TM 9-2320-280-24P-1 (available in the TM forum for free)

Looking up belts in the index it shows Group 05 - 0505 - Fan assemblies and belts, Diagram 32

Going to diagram 32, yep that looks like it.

The belts are Item #2 and on page 32-1 it shows 2 parts numbers are used for different vehicles. 43-5791 and 5598213. Which one is correct?

The part numbers are tied to a UOC. What in the world is that? Maybe the the manual will tell us. Going back to the top of the manual you can search for UOC. Well what do you know. On page 5 it has an explanation of what UOC means and a table of all the different vehicles.



Seeing that a M998 is listed it has a UOC of H13.

Now back to the part numbers on page 32-1. The H13 uses belt #43-5791. Let's go with that.

Plugging that number into www.napaonline.com interchange does not show anything. Now what? I wonder if various part numbers where interchanged. Let's go see.

Lets see if Napa can interchange any of these.

Using the first number it shows 2 belts that interchange, PBH 15500 and NBH 257500. Looks like we have a winner.

Also many of the other numbers listed interchange with the same Napa numbers.

Sorry for the delay, I've finally got back to pulling the belts off and taking them to O'reilley's for a match.

The Part numbers are listed below:
Brand: GATES
XL 7640 (13/32"x64 5/8" OC) - you need 3 of these
XL 7500 (13/32"x50 5/8" OC) - you need 1 (Power Steering Belt)

It's relatively easy to change the 3 belts, it took a little bit longer to change the Power Steering belt as there is a bolt on the back side of the Power Steering pump that must loosen to allow the belt tension to be adjusted.

Here is an even easier way...take the belt to napa and they will measure it.
also, your qty's on Belts looks incorrect...its 2ea, not 3 and 1. What generator are you running?

Interesting you mentioned 2 & 2 configuration. The old belts were 3 & 1 so I assumed that was the correct configuration. I've attached a pic of my current configuration. Does your generator pully have 3 slots for belts?

You have the updated alt that takes 3 belts, the older versions only take 2.

your running a 100 or 200amp GEN....so,your fine. You didn't state what GEN you had, that's why I asked.
you are more the exception to the rule. The 60amp is in 95% of the GP trucks, so they would take 2 and 2 of the belts.

It appears that Gates 7640 is 64 inches long where as Duralast 15635 is 63.5 inches long. Would the longer belt be an issue?

Shouldn't be. You can adjust the alternator which makes it more loose or tighter.

love your step by step warthog! Correct, after flipping through pages and pages of TM info, stumbling around for hours I would have figured that out, but this was so much easier. These forums save me so much time! I too blew all belts in the mud. I mean blew them totally off - no power steering, nothing. So nothing to take into the parts store to measure or get #s off of. it was so hung up 3 of the 4 tires were spinning as it was in gear and i got out to see how bad it was. It took the HEMTT to get it out. Or so i thought. Then came the D4H Cat dozer to pull out the HEMTT, to then retrieve the HUMVEE. Spring muck!

did anyone ever find the part numbers for the 100 and 200a alternator? i just installed a 100a in upgrade from a 60a and had to go from 2 inner and outer belts to 1 inner and 3 outers.

the 3 longer belts (12339359-1 came in the upgrade kit and each has a gnarly twist in them that i cant get out when i tension the alternator. they are tight as can be but maintain a twist in the space between pulleys. i figured they had been packaged for too long under heat or something else, and easier to replace them.

i used napa and could not find a interchange pn for 15651, (wbparts lists this as an alternative for 12339359-1. i can buy them from surplus sellers on ebay, but i feel like i could probably waltz into town tonight and grab them even quicker. i may take one off and take it in, see if i can match them that way.

Take them into town. Get the auto parts guy to measure them up and then post the numbers to the help guys in the future when they search.
