HMMWV, A1 & A2 years? ( various axle shafts and components)

As the title states, we were reading through a TM and I've searched on this forum and it appears the axle shafts are different between all revisions.

I'm looking for information on the axle shafts. We have several 998's ranging from 88 to 92 and we're trying to figure out the part numbers and find a decent place to purchase replacement parts.

Any information on any or all of this would be greatly appreciated.

From what I've seen there are 3 different halfshafts. The early 7.3K ones, the later 10.3K and the 12k. The 7.3 and 10k are interchangeable but I know the 12k need a new input gear in the hubs and I think new brake rotors and caliper mounts and such. Generally the 7k will have boots with fewer bellows than the 10k, you can also tell by the looks of the part with the input splines the 10k is larger. The 12k is the beefiest but requires a lot of other parts to fit them and some say they bind if you offroad a lot.

10k: Its hard to take a picture but the cup here has flat spots that you can feel with your finger, the 7k cup is smooth all the way around.

Notice the increased number of bellows on the boot and the sloped area is much less.

There are two different 12 k shafts also....The ones for solid rotors, and vented rotors.

I went and looked at the pix of the one I purchased. By the pictures above, it looks like a 12k right?

Its most likely a 10k, I think only the uparmored trucks got the 12k

Ok, thanks. I miss read a prior post. So basically, the numbers are related to the GVW of the hmmwv? Mine states it's 7,700, but we have one that's rated at 10,000. So the 10k gvw vehicles would have the 10k axles. Some of the 7,700 that have been serviced and maybe upfitted could have the the 10k axles because they are interchangeable.

Then hmmwv's as you point that have upfitted with armour, the axles were most likely beefed up to support the extra weight?

So in theory, most hmmwv's coming out now are probably 7.3 or 10k axles.

Does the A1, A2 versions of the HMMWV's have anything to do with the type of axle when searching for a replacement?

To my knowledge 7k axles aren't available anymore, they were replaced with 10k a while ago. Only the old trucks that they are sending to auction would have 7k axles and if they broke they were replaced with 10k ones. That's why some trucks have 7k mixed with 10k. I don't know what AMG is producing now but its all going to be 12k or something newer.

The year on the data plate really means little. Mine is stamped as 1989 yet it has a serial number that would make it 85 at best. The frame rails are stamped at 04, when it went through total reset, The motor was rebuilt in 2014.
So just like the mileage the date is also "military" meaning almost nothing.
I have seen some of the GP units dated late 90s with a 6.2L and some dated mid 80s with a 6.5L
As these things were used, fixed and rebuilt who knows what the real date is.
Get the 10K axles and replace as needed.. Also get extras, they come in handy..

I have concluded that the delivery date on the data plates of ALL mil vehicles tends to only be useful when titling and registering. Otherwise they seem to be meaningless.

I read on some post awhile back that u have certain axles for r and l and also front and rear? are any of them interchangable??

Both rear axles are the same length. The front drivers side is shorter and the passengers side longer.

ok just checked mine looks like two front look brand new and so does left rear they look like the 10k or 12k the boots have 6 or 7 ribs ..... the r rear is the old 7k style with the 3or 4 rib boots anyone have a right rear new for sale??

Helped a friend remove his axles today. He had purchased an axle off ebay that supposedly was for a 998.

Here is a pix of 7k axles and what I think to be a 12k axle. (12k at the top). (10k are the same dimensions as 7k's from what I'm told.)



We then measured what we think is the 12k shaft.



Then here is a tape on the 7k axle
