Broke down in Picayune Mississippi ... Need a lowboy to haul back to Louisiana

Well, went to Tennessee to get my truck. Took a gamble. 175 miles from home the front U Joint went out on the steering axle. I have a guy that can maybe haul it but I'm looking for a backup plan. Suggestions appreciated.

Have u tried to pull the shaft and see if it will pull without the front shaft being installed? Try with the keypad mode button on and off (not lite)

Without the front drive shaft you can drive it in mode .But you are limited to 5th gear. But if you have time limp home with 35mph

Tried that. The transmission is also low on oil and got hot. I felt i pushed my luck far enough and decided to give it a rest and look for someone to haul it.

Maybe someone on here knows what shafts have to be working and if you can drop the front one or if you can drop the back shaft if you have a 5 ton i dont know which truck u have 2 or 3 axles

It's an M1078 2.5 ton. I dropped the front drive shaft. Drove it another 35 miles but the transmission was acting up. I decided to park it verses pushing my luck and trashing something

Will cost you as much to tow/haul as it would to just fix the front. Do that there then test drive further down the road. YOU mayyy still have to tow/haul.... caus the tranny is AWD.... driving it with an incongruance to what tranny is designed for (aka that one wheel side missing gears. aka an overall fubared ratio and/or skippy pinion spinning) probably made tranny very unhappy. but if it seems much happier after the front repair. head to LA.

Or should I travel back there. Top off the transmission and try to drove her home. Man. I'd rather not risk damaging the transmission. The dipstick looked good on oil but either out of a breather or somewhere else it was misting oil over the bed. Enough to make me very concerned

It's in a planet fitness parking lot. Not the best repair shop. My work and my kids school will soon interfere with getting this done. Shipping is definitely easier

If your going to pull it home im pretty sure you need to pull front and rear shaft to keep transmission from spinning or pull axle shafts .

i would have it trailer hauled. I don't know anyone with a truck big enough to haul it. Well, one guy. He is offshore right now

I'm paranoid about the transmission. she wasent pulling right. I was in mode. in 5th she started slowing down. I pulled over quick. she shifted hard in 1st and 2nd gear. It has to be low. Something is leaking. She went 500 miles before i had problems. I'm tempted to go back to Picayunne with oil, top it off and see what happens. that's a 3 hr drive for a gamble. crap. The another 5 hrs of driving back if it works.

I looked back and saw you have a 1078 if you cant find a lowboy a medium twin screw wrecker can lift the front and tow it the driver will pull whatever he need axle /shaft probly cheaper but i bet that bill would be $600 or better

If you are blowing out trans fluid and the trans is over heating then it shouldnt be driven. You can pull the two rear driveshafts out the hub ends and have a wrecker lift the front. If you want to drive it home you need to figure out where fluid is coming out and why. There is a pump on the side of the trans that circulates trans fluid to a cooler under the front of the motor. Those lines can develop leaks. The hard lines develop cracks in the flare ends.

Exactly. With everything going on... i chose not to push my luck further and trash the trans. I could travel up there with oil, top it off and take a chance. that could be a very very expensive chance.
