starter is having an engaging problem and the engine will not turn over. Mechanic says he is having trouble finding starter shims (truck is a 1993/1994). Where can I go to find starter shims? Is there any civvy shims that will work?

Actually one of the easiest things to find in the parts TM.
Google the part number and you will find several sources
The civy 6.2/6.5L do not use this starter or shim

It only requires one shim, if your starter has this .080" shim then there is another problem.

Any parts store should stock motormite help / doorman gm shims. Typically comes 2 or 3 different widths in one card. Mainstream gm 60-90's

You will have to measure to get the correct width with feeler gauges or mic. Looks like oe military is .080 according to tm

You don’t need shims…I’ve installed hundreds of hmmwv starters and about half never had a shim…made no differenc.
your problem is your starter
