Can we create a salvage yard reference guide, or something similar?

If this already exists I apologize for not locating it. I am searching for a hub and I am now realizing that locating salvage yards that deal with this sort of stuff is tough. I do not look for many parts and have had no need to seek out salvage yards that deal in military parts. So I figured there must be others who have no idea where to go either. With all the people on here that do know where to go and who to call I was hoping we could put together some kind of reference chart or list and make it a sticky (or whatever you call it). I was hoping it could be a well organized list by state and not just a thread with random responses. Is this a complicated goal to accomplish?

I was thinking something that goes by state and lists the name of the yard and thier contact information. Maybe even what they specialize in. Some of the places I called this morning wanted the NSN number for the part. How the hell am I suppose to know that?

That is one reason I think we need some kind of list. That way we know who to contact instead of wasting hours looking for stuff in the wrong place.

Correct me if I am wrong, but the technical manual for the item the hub is on should tell you. That is if the item has a tech man, if not I feel your pain.

With LOGSA and SS having free ETM's for just about all surplused MV's, there isnt much good explaination for not having a TM at all. Heck, even Adobe Reader (the program you need to open up the ETM's) is free for the download

I dont buy that excuse.

Wow, you guys really know how to get off track. First off, I did not know I could get free TM's. Second, the trailer I am trying to get a hub for is not even mine, and third I was looking for a used hub. The guy could not even tell me if they had any trailers, at all. I am into military vehicles, but that does not mean I know all the little ends and outs like getting free TM's. Not knowing who to go to is another issue people in my position have to suffer through. That is why I think it would be good to have a list we all can refference when we are trying to track down parts.

I think it was someone on here that said about people spending thousands of dollars for a truck but won't spend 50.00 for a set of manuals for them! This is very true.
I bought the manuals first, because that was all I could afford at the time. Wayne

Click on this link, type in the vehicle/trailer/generator/M series #/NSN or if you know the TM #, put that in. This will allow you to get all the public access ETM's there are.

Those are great tools for locating part numbers. But I have question, if I am looking for a used part like in a salvage yard what good will the NSN number do? I can understand if I was looking for a new part, but I was looking for a used one becuase a new one costs too much.

The NSN numbers are still good for used parts too. The NSN identifies the part not the condition. Even a junkyard can use the numbers.

If you only need one part, try the people on here. There is a classified section for buying and selling.

Somebody would have to do it and time is in short supply just updating and checking for dead links would take a good bit of time.
If you know how I'm sure the guy/guys in charge of actually changing something would/may at least take a look at it.
You can start a post and see how many responses you get, if it works out a sticky could/might happen. Wayne

Lonesome, you have a GREAT IDEA!!! I have been thinking of that for a while. It would make a great addtion to the site. Kind of like the advertiser's index in Military Vehicles Magazine and Supply Line Magazine. Why can't we do this in the WIKI section. Just start a thread called "surplus yards" and everyone enter their state and all available yards in that state, and what inventory they have.

I used to know where several yards were in my general area. Sadly they are just about all gone due to the high scrap prices a year or so back. The ones that still have parts think they are made of gold. I've had my best luck posting that I need a part on this site and I've always found somebody that had it or somebody would let me know where to get it. Speaking of virtual salvage yards, I think we have one right here on this site .

I posted a want ad in the classifieds. I also posted a thread in the trailer section asking where I can find one. So far, no bites.

I have the desire, just not the knowledge. I would not know where to begin with posting soemthing like that. Other than starting a list with all the states and having people fill them in, I would not know how to make it work in the internet land.

OK, I will give it a shot. The WIKI is a forum in itself down at the bottom of the list. It will be titled "Active Surplus Yards". I will list all 50 states, and then add a few yards myself. The format will be:
State
Joe Blow's Surplus, 123 Anywhere Rd, Anycity, State, Phone 555-1212, web site if available, type of inventory (used, new, type of vehicles)

Anyone can add a yard as they come across them. If one closes up, delete the entry.

Mods, does this sound like the right place for this? I.E. the WIKI?
