Picking up an A3

I am close to the auction close of an A3 and if all goes well it will be mine. I was told the truck was driven to the lot but that was a while ago and no one is really sure it will start on its own now. I will be using my diesel F350 with a trailer to go and get it but I would like to drive it onto the trailer. How can I best jump the truck with mine? And if it won't start after that are they light enough to use a come-along to get it on the trailer? And is there anything else I should take with me as a precaution?

How long of a recovery are you planning?

if you need to jump it then hook up your 350 to only 1 battery and let it charge for a few minutes then hook to the other and crank.

You know it's the siple answers that get me everytime, they just seem to easy. Guess it's time to get over that.

Take a couple of hot 12 volt batteries and a set of jumper cables as well as a can of ether. A quick shot into the air cleaner, and hit the starter button.

As for the come-along, what is it rated for? The M35a3 weighs close to 14k.

Depending on GL site location, they may be available for loading assistance, otherwise, eat your Wheaties and get cranking.

While I'm sure you could come-a-long a deuce onto a trailer, It's not going to be easy. It's going to be some hard pulling getting that thing up the ramps.

One come-along won't get the job done, two MIGHT but there are going to be two guys with seriously aching muscles. I agree Nonot above, bring freshly charged batteries, and if you use either, use just a quick squirt.

Oh yeah, check the oil, some people have found them drained of such.

Get a copy of the -10 operators manual for your truck. It will give you all the things to check before you even try and fire it up. It does not look like there is one in the Resources on this site. A little reading can save you $$$ in repairs. You might, if you know someone in the Guard or Reserve be able to bum a copy or make copies of the "before operation" section of the manual.

That's not the complete manual. There should be close to two hundred pages or so.

I found this one but it's not the easiest to go through on the computer screen. And I'm just not willing to print over 500 pages at this time. If some one with a bit more tech experiance than me could tell me if this would be more of what I need please.

Dont print it all at once, only print what you need, and eventually you will print it all out.

Still not the operators manual, The ones you have found are the -24 direct Maintenance they are great ones to have as they give you an idea on what and how to trouble shoot a problem, Exploded views, part # and how to repair and replace "unit" level items. The -24 will show you a picture and the part # of the dip stick, but not how you should check the oil or tell you the type or amount of oil like a -10 and a LO (lube order) will.
