Here is another article about oil additives. They have some words to say about Lucas too!

The Facts About Aftermarket Oil Additives

-Chuck

The 'reviewer' is evidently an AMSOIL distributor... while there are some valid questions in the review, it is CLEARLY biased.

Also, one AMSOIL study said that 'disposing of waste oil is typically very costly'

GuardianPestFleetStudy-g2244

Um... no, its not. Now a days you get a buck or two a gallon for used motor oil (thats if you are not burning it for shop heat). Maybe 10 years ago you had to pay to haul it away..

Not the best source of information.. lots of FUDs.

Yes, I know. I though it was obvious enough that I didn't mention it, but I probably should have anyway.

I still haven't been able to find any positive test results that aren't from a biased source... negative ones either. Even Bob is the Oil guy has bent some of his tests towards his sponsor's products.... rather disappointing.

Consumer Products came out against other oil thickeners, like Lucas, but didn't actually test Lucas in their NY taxicab study about 14 years back.

The hunt continues...

I will deffinatly stick by lucus for now. The change in the van was really noticable when I dropped some in the tranny. I just did an engine oil change in the same van a weekend ago with oil without lucus added and it does sound a bit more noisey after the change. Only reason I didn't dump some in this time is I forgot to pick some up and I am too lazy to head to the store with greasy hands.

The deuce is currently without it, but I drive the thing once a week at best so I am not worried about it too much.

Put Lucas in the trasfer case, made a big dirrerance in noise much quieter, don't know about temp yet haven't driven it very far. Only draw back is my arm is dead from trying to pump that stuff with that dumb little soap pump you get at NAPA. Took an ink canister from work and addapted it to pump lucas instead of ink, gonna work much better for the trans and diffs

What is the recommended norm for the tranny, transfer case, and differentials? I mean the quantity of Lucas to add that is..

I've followed this thread closely do to the fact i've thought about putting lucas in my engine for over a year now. Well yesterday i did a complete filter change and the engine got one gallon of lucas and five gallons of rotella 15-40. I honestly think it runs quieter now, But... and maybe it was foolish, i thought i'd see an increase in oil pressure. Opon start up and at normal operating temp. my oil pressure was the same. Soooooo does it work?? Well who knows, But i surely don't think its hurting anything and at next oil change it well be givin another gallon of this goo

Hven't put Lucas in my Deuce yet, (other than my son, Lucas), but did put a quart in my '94 Maxima. She has 285,000 miles, and now she's much quieter, and I have an increase in fuel mileage from 24.1 to 28.5 in one week. (I'm kinda obsessive-compulsive on the mileage thing) Based on this, the Deuce will get a gallon of Lucas at the next change. Not for increased mileage, but because if it makes the Maxima run more effecient, it surely can't hurt the Duece.

for the amount in a tranny I put 2 parts atf 1 part lucus. I do a tranny fluid change every 60k so it is prob a slightly higher amount now because of the residue oil in the torque converter. I change the PITA filter every other change.

Well I did it.
I could only afford one gallon at this time so I did all three axles and the transfer case.
I want to install the winch when it comes in so I'll have to drain the tranny oil anyway in order to mount the PTO box (Lucas to be added with new oil then).
What I did; My gear oil only has about 400 miles and 9 months on it so I drained out the bottom two to three quarts.
The bottom quart or so was thinned out, filtered through a 1 micron filter and put in the fuel tank.
I took the other two quarts or so and mixed in a measured 1-quart of Lucas with a new paint stirrer mounted in an electric drill. Man does that stuff stink!
Anyway the temperature was warm and sunny this weekend so I took the plunge. I did one gearbox at a time and added the treated oil back into the same gearbox that it was drained from. I did the one-knuckle check and what oil I was short was topped off with brand new gear oil left from the last purchase of two 5-gallon pails.
This took about three hours so it was a labor of love and brought on a few mis-guided looks from "the other half" combined with multiple episodes of shaking of the head.
I will be driving it to work in the morning (Wed) so I'll put about 35 miles on it.
I'm anxious to see if there is any difference in noise or change in heat generation. I ony have a quart in the engine because I want to change the oil and add the spin-on filter kit at the same time.

I've been watching this thread and couldn't wait to put it my truck. So I got some Lucas and some GL1 and got started, did the transfer case and it made a big differance in noise. So I put it in the transmition 50/50 GL1 and Lucas. Now I have a heck of a time getting it into 3rd and 4th gear, once it gets warmed up its better but still not as good as it was with stright GL1. Gonna drain it out and try a higher percentage of GL1 to Lucas. Anyone else have a prob like this.

I was going to add Lucas to my next oil change so I talked to our head tech. He has two diesel trucks one being a pulling truck. Said he used to run it before he ran across this site. Everyone who runs this stuff might want to check this out. What about Additives?

You might find it enlightening to read the whole thread. Bob is the oil guy has been discussed. His testing would have been more useful if he would have discussed speeds, mixtures, etc.. Some think it would have been better if he had tried the Lucas oil thickener in more than one brand of oil.

In my not so humble opinion, Lucas is fine if you have a worn out engine/transmission that needs a thicker oil to take up the tolerances, and keep the parts from banging about in their worn out state.. If your engine/transmission is in good shape, Lucas will do nothing good for it.

As to the anecdotes telling of increased fuel efficiency after adding Lucas: If the numbers were really as good as being touted, the use of Lucas would be mandated by the federal government... increased fuel efficiency is a national goal... Being a simple oil thickener, Lucas should decrease the fuel efficiency. As of yet, I have seen no studies that indicate any improvement in fuel efficiency through the use of an oil thickener like Lucas.

As always, this is my opinion. You are welcome to have a different opinion.

I gotta call BS on this -

It's like saying "If you could prove smoking is bad for you, the federal government would ban it".

Oh wait, there is proof smoking is bad.

Reduced healthcare costs and a healthier population is a national goal too, isn't it?

I used Lucas in my truck and I have ZERO data so far, based on the amount of driving I've done since I poured it in. Any data I come up with after I put some miles in will only be by my seat of the pants dyno anyway so it will only be useful to me and a few people who ask me for advice.

I just think it's funny that people say if Lucas (or anything else for that matter) was good, OEMs and/or the gov would mandate it.

Amen brother! You got to ask "Who/what is it good for?" Higher fuel economy is good for the consumer (me and you), but not so good for the producer (oil companies in way of profits, and the govment in way of taxes on each gallon).
