Was flipping the hubs to install the Canadian MLVW and found that the guys that last rebuilt the axle ends had them all screwed up. Driver's rear axle was correct as per the TM - driver's front axle (rear) had the outer wheel seal installed facing out - and both axles on the passenger's side were like the pic below - bearing + nut + seal + locking ring + nut.

I had to make a call to Gimpyrobb to confirm to me which way the seals went after seeing this mess - I knew the seals went against the bearing, but was second guessing myself on how they should be facing. Thanks Chris !!

I found that my brakes were adjusted about .010" top and bottom on every wheel. I worked for about 45 minutes trying to get the first one to .010" on bottom and .020" on top and it was a ROYAL PITA, so I set it back to .010" on both. Didn't have any wheel cylinders leaking that I could tell.

Also adjusted my clutch per the TM. I can smell something when in high gear pulling a hill that I suspected may be clutch. The RPM's don't climb or spike like I'd expect them to though, but the clutch does engage at the top of the stroke. I found the measurement from the throwout bearing lever to the housing at 4" +. I moved it a could splines to get it to 3 1/4" per the TM and adjusted the pedal to about 1 3/4" free play. Clutch still engages at top of stroke, but at least I know it's per the TM now.

Also installed the Donaldson muffler. It made a big difference in sound. VERY worth the money and effort to install it - which was easy to do.

Only 1 was leaking and it was the passenger front tandem, one with the seal between the nuts. The one I took the picture of was not leaking - the gear oil was washing the bearings down but it wasn't leaking out the inner seal yet.

in theory wouldn't the bearings perform better bathed in gear oil than a thick grease?

interestign catch though. Part of why I hate letting anyone else work on my vehicles, I usually end up having to fix something they messed up.

Don't forget the parking brake. Mine was frozen at the pivot points and the cable stuck. I drove about 100yds from where it was parked and thought something was on fire.

Definitely check the parking brake- while it may not be the source of your smell, they seem to be sensitive to lack of or just plain maladjustment.

Not really. Gear oil has to "flow" in order to disperse the heat. Otherwise it just gets hot and thin.

In the case of a deuce, the gear oil just saturates the bearings, but does not return to the gear housing to cool. When it finally thins the grease, the bearings run to hot.
