Would there be any reason that the IP timing could have got off? There is no way you EGT should be 600deg at idle. Sounds like you're getting plenty of fuel. With hard starting and low power your timing could be off. I've never been into a multifuel IP so I don't know if anything internal could break and throw off the timing.

I'm sitting here thinking that maybe low compression on one or more cylinders might cause your problems but with all the info you have given I'm leaning towards a IP timing issue.

Only other thing I could think of would be a faulty pyro. That still wouldn't answer your low power and starting issues though.

I'm wondering about timing myself. The bolt holding the timing gear could have slipped. I'd also have a look or take it for a spin without the pipe from the air cleaner housing to the turbo. My M108 pipe had a sizable mud dobber nest in it at one point. They can enter through the air cleaner housing and were skipping by the air cleaner somehow (hole I suspect).

This is similar to the problem I'm having. I have not checked my air cleaner though, I guess I need to check that. It's about the only thing I haven't done. There were several suspicions of my IP timing being off as well.

Don't know how timing would get off. Have not done anything around the IP. I picked up a 977? and towed it home and might have strained the motor and caused an issue. I will check the pipe from air cleaner to turbo and if not that I am thinking replace with a running takeout and be done. By the time I put $$$ into this motor I can replace and be ahead.

Take off the turbo inlet and see if you can deflect the blades and make them contact the housing. You shouldn't be able to. Also the turbo should turn smoothly by finger with a small bit of resistance. My guess if that it isn't a clogged air filter, the turbo has pooped the bed. :(

High EGT's are from too much fuel and/or not enough air. You can't get high EGT's from too little fuel in a Diesel.

Steve, If you have run alot of used oil, the turbine blades may be coaked. I have seen this many times. Pull the exaust pipe and inspect the turbine. Oiley resedue may be clogging the gap between the turbine and the exaust gas casing. This usally happenes in cold temps. It's alot like a wetstacking generator when it's ran unloaded.

Holy crud, there is most, if not ALL your problem! Time to pull the turbo and clean it. Walnut shells in a CLEAN abrasive blast cabnet would take care of that easily. No glass bead or sand particles allowed though, bad for the bearings. We used walnut shells in a FAA certified engine repair station on the pistons and cylinders, works well. They are used sometimes to clean compressor blades in turbine engines, run the engine and shovel in the walnut shells.

While that turbo is nasty, If it's still spinning freely I don't think that's your whole problem. Have you checked your muffler? If the turbo looks like that there's a pretty good chance the muffler is plugged also. Maybe even the manifold and or even the combustion chamber.

What mixture of fuel are you running? Looks like you may need to change the recipe.

looks dirtier than it ought to. huh. The pump timing gear phase is held by slots and bolts, right? Could it have been slowly slipping and now is so far off the ting is not going to run? I think this can be checked without taking anything apart except a cover off the side of the IP and turning the engine to a specific spot.
