i wanna winch

ive seen winches on some m1009 onnly in pic and i would like to know what kind would i have to get . is there a special one to fit that truck and does it have to be a 24v one etc if someone can help me out that would be great..thanx

I am thinking of getting one too. I don't think there is a special one for this truck , but I plan on getting a 24V hydrolic one. I have been told it is better to get a mounted one than a receiver hitch type if you are going to get one. I think you can use a 12V or a 24V, but the 24 one draws less amps for the same power. Also you can use the slave connector already on the front.

They make 24v and 12v ones, as well as PTO ones if you want to change the transfer case to one that has a PTO (like a 205). I was contemplating a 24v one, as it'd likely be better than a 12v one, but then I realized that 12v ones are more common secondhand, and I'll likely be converting to 12v at some point, and I don't really go off road that much, so I'll hold out. If you get a 12v one, just hook it to the first battery. Or the second, if you make sure you ground it back to that battery, rather than chassis ground.

I saw somwhere they had the cucv brushguard with the winch mount on it. Most people with the k5 go with the 8000-9000lb winch. I think the popular one is the warn 8274 winch. It is pretty versitile. I like the pto style too but as stated you will have to swap tcases. Stick with the 12v set up for the common parts factor. Warn, Ramsey, Tmax, Bulldog, are good winches

Go with at least a 9000 lb winch. The general rule of thumb for winches is at least 1.5 times the GVWR of the truck. Most K5's are around 6k anyways so a 9k winch should be the minimum. A 8274 is a nice winch but just not big enough for these trucks.

Someone had a post on here a while back about how they mounted their winch behind the bumper. Lots of people have done it. There's also a variety of civilian options which would work on ours but the only difficulty would be the brushguard. That could be cut or removed easily enough though.

I have no relation to the seller, but the winches he has are the mil issue 10.5K Milemarker Hydralic model that are now installed on the HMMWV's.. I have one of them on my HMMWV, and it's really slick. http://milemarker.com/winch-10.html

The mil MM winch is based off the 75-5005C model. The Mil one is 24V.

i run a superwinch 12v on the front of my truck with some custom fabbed brackets and plates didnt need to remove the brush gaurd or hack up the bumper to get it to work

This allows it to be tucked up behind the bumper so it is well protected. The mount is a piece of 1/4" plate bent into a Z shape, with two side plates to catch the bumper mount bolts - no cutting or drilling of the truck required.

They're a set of old Q78-16 "Trak n Blazer" tires I picked up at a swap meet. The tread pattern is kind of a cross between the old bias buckshot mudder and a super swamper. They look very similar to the Co-op Grip Spur.

Flip over to the warn industrial site instead of the truck & auto part. They have the winches for the HMMWV listed there. It is a industrial 12000# winch electronically limited to 9000#, and has a narrower drum than the standaard industrial 12000#. Looks like the dimensions are similar for the 63891 severe duty 12 winch, but I've never actually seen one to verify that. I got mine as a used take-off, as they are rather expensive new.

Photos are the front and bottom of the mount I made, prior to welding the side plates on. The bumper bolts through the top of the frame pass through the lip at the top of the mount. I had to weld some of the nuts to the mount as there wasn't clearance to get to them after the winch and bumper were in place, but this allowed me to keep the winch higher and closer to the vehicle (the front spring hangers are lower than the bottom of the mount). The fairlead is also a custom piece to keep the winch up high. You could use a normal fairlead if you let the winch hang down a bit further, and playing with the angle of the front face of the mount would probably solve the bolt access; I ended up with 1/4" between the mount and the bumper, and about 2.5" between the winch and the front crossmember. Also, the solenoid pack was mounted up by the batteries instead of on the winch itself.

It was a bit of work to execute, but in my opinion well worth the effort.

The winch is a 10,500 ld Hummv winch with the selionds built in at 24V, To convert to 12 volt you remove and replace the selionds at 35.00 (2 ea) It will cost me 185.00 for get the Type spefic hoses for the hydroboost, power steering, and Hand controller. About another 20.00 for necessary wiring and etc. I found a used full bumper mount off a fire responce truck for 75.00. I plan on removing the brush guard, modifing it and mounting on the winch bumper and making a mounting area for my high lift jack. Then adding some tow hooks and shackle points for shackes for pulling and tie down. Then I have to mount one on my truck, and hide a spare in the garage in case one craps out.

If you can weld, the mounting options are limitless. I put a 17,500lb winch on the front of my M1009. I want to be able to sink it to the axles & not even question whether it will pull itself out. The 7/16" cable does take some effort though.

We made a simple rolled bracket out of 1/8" plate so it bolted in existing holes in the frame rails. I wanted to keep the grill guard intact and used an 9500 rated winch. We cut a slot in the front bumper and mounted a roller fair lead to the stock from bumper. If I had it to do over again, I would have switched to the new rope and a regular fair lead to keep it cleaner.

I disagree that the 8000 winches are not enough as all it takes is a block or two to increase the pull. Normally you do not have to winch over a few feet anyway, once you are free, it is time to clean up the mess.

I had a 8274 on the front of my M715 and I liked to run it with a block, mainly because of line speed. They are a very fast winch and a dangerous one to operate. I like them though, super, super reliable and easy to work on. The bad part about putting one on a M1009 is the height of the upright design. You would have to leave it hanging way out there or butcher the grill guard.

I just jumped off of a single battery and used a 12V winch. Never had an issue at either end. I also mounted one in the middle of the rear frame of both my M715 and my M1008. I removed the pintle hitch on both trucks and ran the fair lead in the rear frame.

On the rear mount in the M1008 I used the winch to mount the license plate, just made a stainless steel tag and welded a tab on the inside. I used a spring attached to the loop in the cable to suck it up to the bumper with the winch cable. I also wired in trailer connectors for the remote winch lines. I stored the remotes behind the seat in an ammo can and the cables were long enough to reach the cab from the plug ins. I had it set up with two remotes, but I never actually used both winches at once on the M1008. I did use both winches on my M715 in one recovery at the same time. Glen

What does that Warn #9000 weigh? Is an 18000 lb winch too much? Told it weighs 175#. Have a friend trying to sell that winch. It would need another bumper.etc seems to me and would definately be aftermarket in appearance. I really like the way jmassenga's looks.

I have a massive winch in 24V. it came with a m37 i bought 6 years ago. It is missing the controls. I have no idea if it works all i know it is a warn and it must weight 150 lbs. Not sure if i will use it or not. I like the behind the bumper look.
