Spin on oil filter kit

This is the first post I have done since joining, so I hope it is done correctly. I was thinking of puting a spin on oil filter kit on my deuce and was wondering if any of you had some pros or cons about the kits.

The pros are, quicker oil pressure after you turn the truck off. The cons is, if its been sitting for a while, the oil still drains forward. I think swapping the stock filters is less of a mess than the spin-ons. This is just what I have observed, it may be different for others.

I put the spin oil filters, spin on primary and spin on secondary fuel filter adapters from jatonka. I have been very satisfied with all of them. The oil filter change is extremely quick, little spillage and best of all the kits work as promised.

Oil pressure comes much more rapidly as a result. One thing I have done is to put some large magnets from the hardware store on the outside of the oil filters. I figure these will trap any metal floating in the oil that can be too small for the filters to catch.

Put them on. You will like them.

I got my Oil Filter kit from JATONKA. Great kit, high quality and the filters are readily available from napa and are typical Fleet diesel oil filter. I changed the filters this summer and did not spill a drop of oil. I am very pleased and would recommend this as your number one item on your deuce to do list.

I ordered my oil filter kit from Jatonka this morning and will be converting all my fuel filters over to his kit this winter, everything I have read leads me to believe his kit is as good or better than any others out there, and this is by people a lot smarter than me!

The most expensive are the stock kind. With all the drawbacks and ancient design, they hurt probably as much as they help in the long run.
I do not disagree at all. The "stock kind" are not what I was discussing though. I was just noting a price diference betwen the availible after market spin on kits.

I have not heard of any problems or failures with any of the spin on kits, be it Westfolk's or JTs. Westfolk tells me he has been running his design on his work trucks for many years without issue and I have no reason to doubt that. JTs have been around awhile too with many happy customers. As far as I can tell they are about as equal as you can get (Westfolk's primary is better IMHO).

With all things being nearly equal on performance, then for me and a lot my friends, it comes down to price. Then again, I'll buy store brand if it tastes the same to save a few bucks.

They don't pay the military what I think I'm worth so I need to watch where I put my $$$ so I can have extra to play with.

Your mileage may vary, to each his own, etc..................

The difference is more than in price

Personally, I prefer the filters that JATONKA recommends. His are true Diesel Truck Fleet high flow anti-drain back filters, not the big block chevy filters that the other guy is using.

Another factor is the size of the passage in the adapter that holds the filter base on and the flilter screws onto. The chevy filter threads onto a smaller 'nipple' and has a smaller diameter bore.

The bore if JATONKA's filter adapter is larger allowing a higher flow with less resistance. That may be a trivial difference to many, but since my truck is a sizeable investment for me, I do want to have the best choice for my lubrication system and a few dollars more is worth it as I see enough of an improvement in JATONKA's design.

I do not want to start a battle here, and there already are statements made in this thread that are somewhat slanted with no objectivity beyond price.

All I am saying is that I trust JATONKA that his adapters do what they should and I can get help and advice from John anytime I need it and he is a resource for far more than just Spin on Filter adapters. His experience alone is worth more than I can estimate.

I see the investment in JATONKA's adapters as being for more than just his kit.

You can do what you want, and I recommend you do your research as there are differences between these kits. I did my research and made my choice and I am very happy with the results.

There are A LOT of different filters you can run on Westfolk's oil adapters. I DID my research (let's not publicly suggest I haven't when you don't know what I have done).

Lets not forget many people swap out the fuel filters for spin ons as well. Again, there are numerous options for filters. It ain't all about the oil.

For the primary I see no reason to put an adapter plate on there when you can easily swap the entire mount (as many folks do on their own).

When Westfolk tells me he has been running his design for many years on his work trucks, I beleive him. He uses his trucks in his business, not for a toy like I do. If they can handle what he is throwing at them, I'll be just fine.

I am NOT suggesting there is anything wrong with JTs stuff or he isn't a great guy. A few minutes with the search function will show that I have never said a bad thing about him or his product.

Nothing wrong with competition and free market. That's what makes America great. That's why I do what I do every day to help keep it that way.

Choices and options - no one should complain about having those.

Just so you know, I have put almost 7500 miles on my truck in 20 months so it is NOT A TOY.

There is more to life than just money. I learned that along time ago.

Part of my research was meeting JATONKA and I was impressed with his professionalism, his thorough knowledge of the multifuel engine and his experience with the M35 in general. I came away from our meeting confident that if I had any problems with my deuce John would be there for me. To me his word is a bond of trust.

I have not made price my only factor in what I do with my truck. I have not said to anyone that Westfolks kits are not as good. I simply pointed out the engineering differences based on the information I have about both designs.

I am an automotive information specialist and have spent years in research and service of trucks, and cars. I made my choice and am willing to defend why. I am advising anyone who readsthis thread to be an informed buyer and that you need to trust who you do business with.

Knowing and trusting your source of parts and support is sound advice to anyone, for any automotive issue for that matter.

I do resent and take exception to the implication that my opinion is not valid as you assume my truck is a toy. That is disrespectful to be very honest. You have no idea what I do, nor do you have a clue as to what I do with my deuce.

To anyone who reviews this thread, all I can say is do your homework, find a good source of supplies and support and stick with that source.
