Holy thread resurrection, Batman!
My fan is also stuck on. I know the preliminary troubleshooting steps. It could be as simple as a stuck clutch from little use during the winter.
Ok, just to close the loop on this the problem seems remedied by a new voltage regulator.
- With the old regulator, I got no output except perhaps every 5 starts at random.
- With the new regulator, I get output every time and the output is in the "sweet spot" on the meter where the old one was...
Question:
Is there a compatible 28v "only" regulator that is less expensive?
I have the TH400 which is not electronically controlled. I have no use for the 12v output.
Ok, successfully rebuilt my Prestolite PCB with @TOBASH 's help.
That did not appear to be my problem. My alternator still works intermittently. It totally fooled me because I put the PCB back in and the alternator functioned correctly for a few starts and short drives. I did take the PCB back...
For the secondary relay, I purchased the same kind that some other guys in this thread have used.
I took special care to find ones that were rated for "continuous duty" even though the secondary relay is only momentarily engaged for the glow plugs because Amazon is sketch sometimes. I wanted...
PCB- Prestolite Edition:
At least for the Prestolite box, Kboy is right. If you want the "Wait" light to function, it needs to be connected to the (-) or ground side of the secondary relay.
-The Prestolite box has three relay-looking devices in it. You can safely reuse the steel-bodied...
TOB-
Is post #51 in that thread still the most up-to-date solution? The thread is long and winding and I want to make sure I'm using the latest and best.
You mentioned making a video. Is it out there somewhere?
With the exception of the manual glow plug button, will I be able to fit...
Ah, ok. So either find another Prestolite box or do a multi-point upgrade to some sort of EESS and a TSU and probably glow plugs as well.
I've had this truck for...3-4 years now. It starts like a champ in very cold weather so I don't think the glow plugs are fried, yet.
Grrr... I went to test everything out and the alternator is working.
I'm pretty certain that it's the EESS box now. Obviously, I'll confirm this with the test procedure when it fails again.
I have the Presolite box, not Nartron. Black, silver label.
My understanding is that Thou Shalt Not Mix...
@Coug Ah, ok. I knew there was a relationship of some sort between the two.
I downloaded the 200a alternator troubleshooting guide. The steps are simple enough.
For testing purposes, is there a way to simulate the signal from the start box to trick the alternator into starting?
