Friend of mine is a professional mechanic, mostly cars but still knows a boat load more about all mechanics than I do. He got a medium truck at an auction, bought it for the engine to swap but it came with a Hydro-Max which he installed on his M61A2 (with air brakes). He suggested I do the same and I'm in the process of swapping over to Boyce's disc brakes.

However, and I'm posting this to pass on some info, it seems Hydro-Max won't work with the Boyce brakes. That's not to say a hydroboost brake system won't, just not Bosch's Hydro-Max.

Sweeting Performance has a page just for Deuces and a system for Deuces with disc brakes, but when I asked him about using Hydro-Max, he responded:

" It wouldn't be the right size for the 2001 F550 front disc, the Hydro-Max would push too much volume for them, which would fill up the caliper pistons too fast, and you would then have no pedal throw. The Hydro-Max would have been right for the stock original drum brakes. "

He also suggested going with a modern air system, which would get rid of the issue of our air packs.

I know some of you purists will say all of this is poppycock, but this is the modification area, and I'm just saying.

Part of what I'm trying to do is modernize some parts of the Deuce while keeping other older parts, it might sound insane, but humour me.
