I won this truck and brought it back to life. Everything works though the tires are about done for. LD-465 N/A engine, O/D transmission, standard t-case, etc there. Axles have been cut and welded to self contained hubs similar to the M656 family though I've not opened them yet to verify. Full air brakes, air lockers in all axles, and power steering. The truck is actually in very good shape with most of the wear on one side of the truck (north facing winds?) and the cab top being tattered. The engine sings and smokes under throttle as these old N/A engines do. It's just a matter of time before it blows the head gasket and when it does I have a NIC (new in crate) LDS-465-1A engine to drop in it.

never seen/heard of one of these animals before .. an LDS in there would make it quite respectable, as if it isn't already with the OS tires and lockers etc !

The search for the replacement for the "Reo" 2V-ton M- series truck has been in progress for several years. The original version, built at various times by Reo, Studebaker, Curtiss Wright (Studebaker), White (Reo), Kaiser Jeep, AM General, and often modified by privute and government agencies to meet specific needs, may be a good design, but it is also an old design. Numerous attempts have been made to update or even completely redesign these reliable trucks, mostly to no avail. This 2V-tonner was being put through a Quality Assurance Test at Yuma Proving Ground, Arizona, in July, 1967, and was described as an XM778. The truck strongly resembles the normal M35 except for single oversized tires, outboard brakes, louvers in the sides of the hood, and radiator shutters which are thermostatically controlled, It was built by White, and featured a dropside cargo body. The hood and front fenders tilted for improved engine access, (SPD)

Although technical details seem unavailable, this Instrument Repair Shop, XM 782 was being tested at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, in 1967 with oversized tires and external brakes. Although the mobility was probably enhanced, there is no record of it being built in quantity. These types of variations from the normal chassis are sometimes purchased in limited quantities for use in desert areas for example, where the usual equipment does not offer enough flotation. Pay special attention to this photo!?!
The M621 and XM778 military trucks are united by the ability to lock all three driving axles of trucks, the differences between these trucks are only in the location of the brake pads: the M621 has an internal location, while the XM778 has an external location. For clarity, photos of the locking of the drive axles of both trucks are presented.
