What's the best way to slowly turn an engine over by hand in a 6.5L n/a hummer? I know I can "find" a way to do it but I'm sure there is a best practice where I won't strip or break something in the process.

Hand barring engine in M1097R1?

Pull the glow plugs and put a big wrench on the "lugs" on the back side of the dampener on the front of the crank. "Should" turn pretty easy. My 2 cents.

Okay, follow up question knowing that I don't have my HMMWV near me at the moment: Are there any marks/lines/dots/etc. on the crank pulley or harmonic balancer that I can use to tell which cylinder is TDC? Or is it easy to tell by looking/probing down the GP hole when a cylinder is TDC?

Yes, there are timing marks on the harmonic balancer, the pointer is on the drivers side below the PS pump.
It is always a good idea to bar an engine over in its normal direction which is clockwise standing in front of the truck looking at the harmonic balancer
