923a2 won't shift out of neutral

Ran the engine for about 45 or 50 minutes. Got the engine up to about 160F Alternator was only charging at 23.9. So there's another issue. But I did clean the batt terminals, put dialectric grease on them, then tightened the cables down. Also, got the three little wires hooked up...

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

Thank you for reminding me. That is one thing I kind of want to try. Just because it is easy. And I like easy. It's been getting up in the low 90s here the past couple of days, so I don't think the could has anything to do with it, but still...

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

Could be. I would think the retainer pin (item 3) would keep that from happening, tho. I'll bet if I disconnect the cable and try to turn the lever by hand, it'll tell me real quick if the shaft is disconnected from the detent plate. It'll be way too easy to turn is my guess. Harbor...

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

Ok... pg 5-309 of the TM is where I think the issue might be. That's on volume 4 of 4 in the pdf series. Page 317 of that file. That stuff looks like what the Allison tech was talking about.

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

Thanks for the concern. I will be careful. Looking at the allison owner's manual, it does appear as if the control valve body sticks down into the oil pan cavity. Will tow it back tomorrow if I get a free moment. Then I'll drain the oil, drop the pan, and see what it looks like and take a...

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

I'm pretty sure the linkage is good. I can see the selector lever on the side of the transmission move when the shift selector is moved. Thanks for the suggestions on the bad tranny. I'll give him an IM and see how much he wants for it. Next step will be to get it over here and drop the...

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

I probably can, it's just at a friend's place down the road. I don't want to drain the fluid and drop the pan over there and kill his good will. I'm going to flat tow it with a deuce over here, first. Hopefully, dropping the pan will allow me to see a little more.

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

Allison tech in corpus said it sounded to him like a pin on the other side of the shift selector sheared off or fell off. Paraphrasing, don't recall his words exactly. Which doesn't sound so bad, except I don't know how I'm going to get at this thing the way it is. I'm going to try adding a...

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

Engine oil and coolant levels were fine. I tried reverse, 1-5, and all the selections below 1-5 down to 1. I didn't drain any of the transmission fluid from the pan, but what I saw on the dipstick looked fine. Didn't smell or taste burnt.

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

Not very long. I don't think I'm getting high enough voltage out of the alternator to properly charge the batteries, so I've tried not to run it long enough to kill the batts. Would it hurt the transmission to run the engine for 10 or 15 minutes with the selector in 1-5 and my foot on the...

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

Correct. I've had the engine running, but I've never seen the vehicle move.

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

The cold check procedure requires shifting into D and R while it is running to "fill the hydraulic circuits." But what I'm wondering is if that will even happening if it isn't actually shifting out of N. Second question: Straight 10W motor oil ok? Will the detergents in motor oil cause an...

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

Per the troubleshooting tips Jim posted: 2. Shift selector linkage unhooked. 2. Connect linkage - shift selector gates must agree with model. Detent positions at transmission must conform...

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

    34. NO RESPONSE TO SHIFT LEVER MOVEMENT Check if shift linkage is disconnected or broken. a. Connect or replace linkage if necessary (para. 4-75). b. If linkage is sound, replace transmission (para. 4-71). END OF TESTING! That's what the DS section of the TM says about No Response to Shift...

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

Question: What is the lever on the side of the transmission that is connected to the shifter cable connected to inside the transmission housing? What does it do? Is it possible for whatever it's connected to inside the housing to get stuck and yet the lever on the outside still move freely?

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

If there are metal shavings, what do you think it could be? Doesn't smell burnt. I haven't dropped the pan yet, tho. The oil on the end of the dipstick looked good.

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

Well, the xfer case is unstuck. Ya'lls suggestion to try it with engine off and air tanks drained seemed to do the trick for that. However, it still won't shift into gear. Transmission shifter does nothing. With 1-5 selected, with engine running, the short drive shaft from transmission to...

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

I didn't think to check that at the time. Will look at the transmission to xfer case shaft while engine is running when I go back Monday.

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

Hm... can I safely pry on or otherwise try to directly manipulate the plunger that goes into the xfer case? Rather than manipulate it via the lever in the cab, I mean? Or do I risk damaging something?

923a2 won't shift out of neutral

Keith is DS maintenance for swmbo, now. Didn't look like the cable was broken or disconnected, but it sure didn't seem like the lever had the same range. I tried "pumping" the lever up and down a few times to see if I could get it to pop in or out, but I don't think it has enough positive...
