Welcome!, check your steering stabilizer, in nearly all the 1008's I have gotten from GL the stabilizer is shot. It could be related to other issues, but this is easy to check.
T-case chain cut a hole in the case?, best bet is to inspect the t-case inards. Do you have any pics showing more of the case to get an idea exactly were this is located?
NP208's aren't that pricey though
Firewall modification (cutting) to accept the larger AC housing just for a start, I think there are threads that discuss adding AC to these trucks.

Yeah, I saw the same thing, looks like it was a dud rebuild, notice the fuel hose in the pic with the bolt and hose clamp to stop fuel from leaking in to the container. . .
