M-60A1 main battle tank from "project" to running and registered

Spectacular! As you probably know, the front glacious on tanks are sloped to help prevent rounds from penetrating. The thickness of the metal ends up being thicker due to the angle of the slope as the plates are layer down at an angle. Measuring the slope(s) on a horizontal plane reveal how...

Strange sound coming from rear end

Got the driveshaft balanced with 2 new u-joints; no change. Will be getting the other 2 balanced. My wife drove it home from a parade we participated in and I followed in my truck. I could not see anything happening. I told TomTime that the ABS light recently started coming on. It goes out...

    Welding & vehicle electronics

You make some good points. I think I will disconnect my batteries if I do any welding - just to be safe. Like I asked Mullaney above, what about components that have internal batteries that keep memory alive when the primary power source is disconnected? 🤷🏻

    Welding & vehicle electronics

I would not want to take a chance. I’m curious if you know if any of the electronic stuff (ECM, etc) have internal batteries to store memory and keep the component “active” even when batteries are disconnected?

    Welding & vehicle electronics

I’m watching a YouTube vid where a guy is fabricating a CL III hitch. He brought up, and should the warning label on the vehicle) where the batteries need to be disconnected (and maybe a couple of other precautions taken) otherwise electronic component could be damaged. Sounds plausible but...

Did not know him but he sounds like a good guy. Rest easy.

CUCV Markings in Army Service in Germany in the late 80s

The body paint was either OD green or camo pattern. Bumper markings for unit and vehicle admin # followed standard marking reg’s.

    Stuck ujoints

I haven’t installed new u-joints. I’m taking the drive shaft to the drive line company so it can be checked out & balanced. They will install the new joints. I haven’t thought that far ahead - but have toyed with using a big C clamp to press the new caps in to the yolk. That, or I’ll use 2...

What have you done to your FMTV or LMTV today

Received the Chelsea PTO wiring kit. Their PTO switch does not match up size wise with the option panel blank slots. I eye-balled the switch and the blank slot cover and it looked like it would work - so I took a blank slot cover and trimmed the ID to slid over the switch. TA-da.

    Stuck ujoints

Keep in mind that I’m throwing away this u-joint. I knocked the flat retaining strap off so I had access to the y-joint cap. I removed the 2 retaining bolts from the u-joint cap retaining strap on the opposite side. Then, I used a 2 jaw puller to drive the u-joint. I slid the jaws under the...

    Stuck ujoints

The Tiger tool is the best option. I avoid putting heat on things like that. I used a 2 jaw puller on mine. Pushed the joint right through, removed the one exposed cap, then put the puller on the other side - lined up the opposite cap straight in the bore - and pushed the u-joint back so I...

Strange sound coming from rear end

This picture didn’t make it in the previous post. It shows how far out the u-joints are from being in phase.

    Rumble when braking

Has any work been done to it lately? My instinct is to blame the brakes. Warped rotor? Stuck caliper piston? Stuck pad? E-brake not fully disengaging?

Strange sound coming from rear end

The drive shaft is out of phase. See pictures. You can also see the damage that occurred way back and for whatever reason. The new scars are from me trying to jockey it around to get access to remove the u-joints. I don’t have any-joint puller and I don’t like the idea of using a Jack. So I...

Strange sound coming from rear end

    I Googled them. Pretty nifty.

Strange sound coming from rear end

My gut was telling me that but I was second-guessing. Turns out the drive shaft IS out of phase. Going to pull the drive shaft & take it in. You’re right about everything! Thanks for the input, much appreciated!

Strange sound coming from rear end

What’s a nord-lock; a split lock washer or tabbed lock plates? I’ll trust a Google search might help me there! lol You recommend I pull the drive shafts and have them serviced? I have seen several posts about getting them balanced but up until now I didn’t latch on to that. I figured...

Strange sound coming from rear end

I’ll certainly take a closer look at the drive shafts. Other than greasing them I only gave them a passing glance.

Strange sound coming from rear end

I first put this truck on the road a few weeks ago & have only gone on very short trips. This happened rather suddenly & coincidentally occurred right after I changed diff oil and greased up the U-joints. I’ve worked in a variety of vehicles over the years and am pretty mechanically inclined -...

Strange sound coming from rear end

Let’s revive this but add a twist. Haven’t been driving the truck much but It started noticing a “thump” like you would get driving over the expansion joints on a concrete slab highway. Today the truck has a noticeable “quick shimmy / bounce” at the same time. I recently greased all fittings...
