No, it's still got the detergents, anti-foam additives, etc. and it meets the new API CJ-4 rating for use with ultra-low sulphur fuels. The only difference is that it is made from a 30wt base stock instead of 15wt, and it does not have viscosity modifying polymers.
Most of the major brands...
I'm not sure there. If the viscosity modifiers got burned, maybe the oil would still behave as a 15 weight and it's failing at high temps would go un-noticed until the analysis showed high metallic content?
I slightly exaggerated how quickly 15w-40 will destroy a Detroit. According to the...
It's because in a 2-cycle Detroit Diesel, every downward stroke of the piston is a power stroke. This makes the piston crown temperatures very high compared to a 4-stroke where only every-other downward stroke is a power stroke. The high piston temperatures of a 2-cycle Detroit ruin the little...
Fascinating. Thanks for the pic, Clinto!
I guess I can accept that the military has put this stuff in deuces, but that does not make it better than 30w. If I may make a suggestion, I would tell people to follow the LO for their vehicle.
Does everyone understand why single weight oils are...
Fascinating, Bjorn... I fail to see what difference it makes though. Is a 1/4" hole really too small for the oil to drain out of the seal?
I would assume, since my engine was manufactured in 1987, that it already includes this upgrade? When I did a clutch job a few years ago I did not replace...
I don't believe it. For example, two-cycle Detroit Diesel engines - which the military still has hundreds of thousands of in everything from HEMTTs to gensets - require a special oil that is unique and not used in any other engine..... OE/HDO-40. That's SAE 40w, rated CF-2 (Just for...
Am I the only one who reads their LO? I don't understand all this talk of multi-grade oils, the LO says 30w, so I use 30w. The military could have spec'ed their equipment for multi-grade oils, but they did not. There is a reason.

Hi Group,
Finally an update...
I am planning to finally get this truck running, I have had so many other projects the past year or so that I hadn't even touched it. In the next week or so, I am going to drag it from my back yard into my driveway and get started. I have been collecting a lot...
Yeah, I use a quart of 2-stroke oil per fill-up. I don't want the hydraulic head of my IP getting stuck!
On another forum, there was a fella that paid a lab to do SAE wear scar tests on nearly a hundred diesel additives, mixed with pump diesel. Commercial products as well as motor oil, trans...
Whoever is telling you this nonsense needs to stop smoking the glass pipe!
These engines may be "de-rated" power-wise, but not RPM. They are not balanced for those speeds.
I agree, if the pump had fried for no reason. In this case I'd be plenty upset, but at myself, not the dealer... Running the batteries down with the pump would fall under "abuse" and be excluded from the warranty anyway.... Though they probably wouldn't do a forensic exam on the dead pump...
You could be right... It may get moved to the steering column soon! :-D
I never thought to look at the rod as a measure of how high the fuel is turned up... I'll get back on that as soon as I get a chance to look...
No, there's no noticeable decrease in pressure, my truck is the same as before - 70 psi cold and at speed, 30 psi hot idle. The Spinner II unit only flows 1 gpm at 60 psi. Below 20 psi, the unit automatically shuts down, so at hot idle there is no worry about lack of oil pressure. The...
Interesting, Bjorn... Your unused dipstick port is plugged with a square drive plug. Mine was an Allen type, and it rounded out when I tried to remove it... I had originally intended to use that and not drill the pan.
What is the history of this problem, sudden change or gradual worsening?
I suspect the gauge - If the truck has been like this for any length of time I think the engine would have quite a knock...
Hi Group,
I finally finished installing the Spinner II and had a chance to do a test drive... It definitely works, when I shut down the engine I can hear the centrifuge spin down. It sounds like a big electric motor slowing down.
I'll update this thread when I have some idea of how well the...
Hi Group,
I've finally had a chance to drive my deuce since the Turbocator gauge was installed, and I'm sure glad I added it! For the test run, I drove as though it wasn't there... I drove like I always have ...to see what kind of temps I've probably generated in the past.
Typical around-town...
