Gimpy, gringeltaube and I just replaced mine (flat tab old style) with the new style head gaskets at the Ga Rally due to a blown compression ring on the back of #3 cylinder, no water in oil or visa versa, no crankcase oil loss, just compression leak.
I had about 15,000 worth of hard running...
I agree with patracy, you can spend way too much valuable time worrying about what it's going to take to fix a problem like this because of all the unknowns and all the work that it will take to figure it out and then the possibility of having to do the engine replacement anyway.

Also, I see where the op mentioned fuel leaking from the shaft area, check and make sure the shaft oring is sealing properly.
The "tiny hammer" can be tricky to line up to the fuel plate slot and then you wonder if it's seated, if you take the fuel line fitting out of the front of the hydraulic...
Sometimes a great deal of leverage is required, try using some cheater bars or longer combination wrenches.
