Still trying to get my M54A2 together

Does anyone know if the spring pads and shock mounts are the same between the M54 and the 800 series trucks?

Word to the wise for vehciles that have been sitting! FIRE!!

I have a different problem, squirrels packing acorns in every nook and cranny. The first winter I had my 5 ton they packed the air cleaner intake solid with acorns, now I have a mushroom from a deuce intake on it. Now it's part of my Spring mantenance on the vehicles a tractors to check for...

I tried contacting New Life Canvas several times and never heard back, I assumed they were out of business. I need new cushions for my M51A2.

Anyone know what typerwriter oil is?

In the chemical industry the joke is t send the newbie to the lab for a bottle of blue vaccum. Then the guys in the lab would tell him they were out of blue, could he use white vaccum.

Bad fuel choice.......I've buggered meself now

Lacquer thinner is pretty hot, you cold blend it off in a gasoline buring engine. Back when I was young and dumb I use to play with all kinds of stuff in my hot rod. I even tried using hydrogen peroxide, I got some 30% stuff from the lab guys, it allowed you to run a much richer mixture but it...

Running Waste Engine oil in the winter

I don't know about pollution issues or heavy metals, but I've been running WMO in my M51A2 for about 4 years now with no problems so far. I filter it twice, once going into my 200 gallon storage tank and then again going into the truck both times through a 10 micron Baldwin filter. I go...

    Disc brake type pinion lock

I figured someone on here would have the answer. Thanks, now I have a starting place. I guess my next stop is to head down to the farm and take some measurements.

    Disc brake type pinion lock

I've seen pictures of a disc brake type of pinion lock on deuces and wondered if anyone knows if somebody makes one for the 5 tons. My parking brake is shot and in lew of being able to find parts to repair it I'm considering changing it to the other type. Any thoughts or ideas?

    FONTANA scrap yard run #4

RE: Parts I wish I was closer, I'm in St. Louis, MO. I imagine I could find my spring pads and shock mounts for my M54 there. How come there aren't any fun places like this in the Midwest? I love salvage yards even if they aren't military stuff.

detroit locker in the rear axle(s)

I understand you all are talking Duces here, but I'm a 5 ton lover and have often wondered if there are air lockers for 5 ton axles. Any ideas or anyone know about them? Maybe I should just start a new thread over with the 5 tonners, but you guys sound like you know what you're talking about.

    Welding for dummies

Some high schools offer adult education classes also, tend to be less formal and geared more for hobby welding rather than production welding. A trained instructor is worth his weight in gold, he can watch your technique and correct a lot of mistakes. I started with a book, but I'm glad I took...

Still trying to get my M54A2 together

I'm getting closer to getting the M54 back together. I bought it as a fire dept return from MO forestry surplus. Besides the power steering pump being shot, which I have since found a replacement, I needed a front axle. All that was left was the springs, and the driveshaft in the back. I...

    5 ton radiator hoses?

I finally got a new power steering pump for the M54A2 fire dept return truck I bought. When I put the radiator back in what hoses does it use? All the hydraulic hoses for the steering were in the cab and where they went was pretty obvious by length and size, but there weren't any old radiator...

    Testing 5 ton Sprag?

Want to test it jack up a front wheel(make sure you have airpressure if it's an air shift), put it in first and try to turn the wheel. It should turn in one direction but not the other, then put it in reverse and it should be just the opposite. Mine worked in reverse, but not forward untill I...

    Slave Cable Install ?

Just add a longer cable runnning from the short cable that you grounded to the cab down to the battery ground. That way you have a good ground for the cab and slave. Cables with lubs on both end are cheap and avialable(usually much cheaper than battery cables).

    No Mo Multi???

For what it's worth my FDC was bypassed when I got my M51A2 and I have been running waste motor oil up to 50% since I got the truck. I do filter the oil before I put it in with a 10 micron filter and store it in a portable tank till I need fuel. No problems yet, seems to have more power with...

Good ideas for screw extraction, please

I've never had much success with bole extractors of any type. Seems like the bolt splits and the extractor winds up acting like a wedge tightening the bolt even more. If the bolt extends throught the pump and you have room to work weld the nut on the back and screw it out that way. I did that...

    Front suspension ratings

I finally got down to measure my springs: 2.5 ton- 47" eye to eye, 5" thick-15 leaves, 2.5" wide 5 ton- 50" eye to eye, 4.5" thick-10 leaves, 3" wide When I went to a local spring shop they gave me a bunch of stuff about not knowing metal hardness and such and wouldn't even guess at ratings.

    Front suspension ratings

Does anyone know what the front spring ratings are for the 2 1/2 and 5 ton trucks? If not can anyone suggest where I might find out.

    needle scaler

I bought an Ingersol Rand Model 182 needle scaler about 10 years ago with an extra set of needles. Still using the original needles. It came with a curved chisel that I use about as much as the the needles. Cuts through metal like a knife through hot butter, also used it to break concrete...
