Ray is correct. No need for a ground rod at the generator. That ground lug should be connected to a wire that grounds with the main panel in the house, which is what it sounds like has been done (Although not pictured).
Yeah, linemen get a different set of rules than the rest of us, lol.
My very first generator I bought at a Cummins Tool sale - was like a roaming Harbor Freight store that hit all the sportsmen's clubs and VFW halls a few times per year. They had a very chinese generator there for cheap, since...
I appreciate the insight! Yeah, the stuff can make your brain hurt, especially when government gets involved and starts writing a 1,000 page novel on what can and can't be done.
So far, so good. When I was hooking up my coal boiler for the season, I tried to do it live, and arced my...
First off I want to publicly thank Light in the Dark, and kloppk for their help in getting me up to speed here. Light in the Dark sold me the unit - he's right up the road from me here in MA.
For the newbies out there, or anyone thinking of a military surplus gen set for standby use, kloppk's...
Wow, they've got that down to a science! Great info - I appreciate it! Never realized a system 20' long could grow that much!
It's probably not visible in the pictures, but my dad's install uses this double-walled pipe on the through-wall section. Zero danger. I can hold my hand on it...
Great idea. I may do that.
I had a difficult time getting that iron coupler on there, since the pipe didn't sit centered in the hole. You can see it in the picture - it's off to one side very tightly. Not sure why that is. Could be just because of where the muffler was sitting when the bolts...
I just measured the OD of the flex pipe threads, and I think I should be able to weld that up right to the exhaust pipe without much trouble. Should be close enough.
I put a nice quick-release union on my dad's setup, but at over $60 just for that, I think I'll just sawzall the pipe if I need...
Ahh, I actually didn't even think to anti-seize the threads! Great idea, Tinstar.
I found a section of pipe, 7.5' long at Summit Racing for $22 - that works! Now the problem is, how the heck do I join that to black iron? Guess I could use some high temp silicone tubing found in performance...
Found a nice flex pipe on Zoro. Wasn't cheap, but it'll get the job done.
I had ordered pipe I had planned to weld together from some company in NYC - 4 days later I'm looking at the email they sent. No shipping! What a waste that was. They refunded my card at least. Back to the drawing board...
Much appreciated as always, fellas. You guys were right! Low ohms between the bars, not only in the main panel, but also in the new transfer switch that isn't fully hooked up yet. Learn something new every day! I figured with the ground bus mounted direct to the panel, and the neutral bus...
I can physically see they are not connected. Each bus bar has either neutral, or ground connected, but not both.
There's a heavier gauge wire that comes out of the ground bus, and runs across the other side of the basement to a rod in the concrete / fieldstone which is pounded into the ground...
Just began my install of my 802A for automatic standby use. Have some questions ...
I learned about this topic when I installed a portable diesel generator for automatic standby use at my dad's place last year - the fact that neutral / ground can only be bonded in ONE location, or else breakers...
Great points. Definitely flex for a least a couple feet up.
The previous owner installed some screens around the unit. I think there's just one area he didn't do, that I'll have to mouseproof. We've got plenty of them around here. My cats usually grab at least one a day from the basement of the...
Yeah, in hindsight I think it would've been better to move the unit outside, behind the barn, but I've already ordered 55' of cable, so now it's going to stay where it's at (Center of my barn). I would need at least 110' to get behind the barn out of sight. Ends up cheaper wire-wise, at least...
