    Starting Hard

Check each glow plug for resistance between the blade terminal and the head with the wire off. 1-3 Ohms is what you should have. The -20 manual has a huge troubleshooting section that walks you through glow plug fixing.

    Lost all lights - scary!

Time for a new 3 lever. The head light power out goes to the selector switch on the floor. That is where hi or low beam is determined. Make sure the connections there are good before you throw out the 3 lever, but it sure seems like the 3 lever is the problem.

    Key/ ignition cylinder?

The self cancelling turn signals are done by a plastic piece inside the column between the steering wheel and the lock cylinder.

    Surging

Looking through your multiple threads on the same basic problem. One finds a common trend. It works great!, it is a piece of crap, I changed a bunch of stuff, it runs great, it is a piece of crap, repeat..... You posted up asking for help. Changing filters was discussed before and ensuring...

    Working on the M37

That is what you get for working in an air conditioned shop. Everybody wants to come inside with you.

Junker to Jewel pics - diamond in the rough...

Wow Rory. I had forgotten or never heard yours was a target hull. Amazing come back. Somehow I also missed the question a few post up about one of my other addictions. British cars. No, no Cobra. That is a 1957 MGA. My wife wants it to be her daily driver some day. I convinced her it...

    Surging

Remember back when gasoline engines had distributors. points and such? A little bit of dirt or crud inside the cap, on the rotor or points made the engine idle bad. The more crud or out of spec the points got, the worse it would idle, start and eventually stumble going down the road. The only...

    Starter just doesn't sound right

Some of the direct drive units also say "no shim" on the cone the solenoid bolts to. So, not all the starters are supposed to have shim. The redux ones don't either.

    Another Hydroboost Question

Joe, Section 7-3 of the CUCV -34 manual takes you through a complete Hydroboost tear down and back together again. I just happened to see that yesterday while looking for something else.

    Broke my A3 dogbone

1 quart will normally fill a completely dry system on a M35 and let it be full after bleeding. You kept being told to get a complete dog bone because the other end of that one is just as old as the end that broke. Get new and don't worry about it again for a few decades.

    removing the governor?

Which vehicle are you asking about. GMC, REO? The REO governor is set at 3400 rpm. Why would you want to turn a straight 6 faster than that?

    M1028 w/ no idle

There are seals on the throttle shaft that can be replaced. However, if those seals are shot and your fuel lines are shot. Chances are the inside of the pump which is the same age is also shot. You will be time, money and frustration ahead by just getting a new IP, replacing every rubber hose...

Smooth in park/neutral, rough in drive

How does your exhaust sound? Can you put your ear next to either tail pipe and get a smooth sound or is it skipping and not really a constant beat? I have 3 6.2 trucks here at my house right now. Two of them are smooth as glass at all times and have a very constant sounding exhaust at each...

Runaway Starter, but different with what wires not to pull

No, no pictures. I have access to a retired gentleman that has worked on electrical stuff all his life. His "retirement" is to use hi one car garage. He is not fast, pays attention to detail and puts in the best parts he can find. I have pulled many starters apart and gotten them to work...

Runaway Starter, but different with what wires not to pull

The solenoid was a new last summer Delco. Fully charged batteries with no slow start conditions. Thanks for the pictures.

Runaway Starter, but different with what wires not to pull

I really hesitated to write anything in the post above besides how to cut off just the starter. Here is why: If your batteries go down while the truck is just sitting, something somewhere in the truck is shorted to ground and needs to be fixed. Fix the drain. If you add a pair of moveable...

Runaway Starter, but different with what wires not to pull

Depends which you want to do. If you just want protection from a run away starter. Put in the recommended starter relay under the dash spoken about in the doghead relay threads. If you want to stop the starter from spinning in a run away like mine, then a cut off switch between the big...

Runaway Starter, but different with what wires not to pull

The starter guy called yesterday. The solenoid had "severe arcing" inside it. That was the problem. Of course, the bushings and brushes needed to be replaced because the darn thing ran for a few minutes straight. Just wanted to finish this one out.

    Onboard Air?

The M35 and up trucks have constant air for trailer emergency brake applications in case there is a break away situation. Just screw a quick connect fitting into a trailer side glad hand that can be found at any truck stop or NAPA and you have air for tools or tire inflation. Most trucks also...

    Onboard Air?

The Yorks? They have their own sump and pump. There is a line plug that can be done to make it better. Here is a site that talks you through the process pretty good: York Compressor for On-Board Air I put a York on my M715 back in 2005. M35 air tanks under the bed. I even ran lines with...
