Interestingly, on a whim I posted on one of the local Facebook gossip groups asking about the truck and "ran into" none other than the guy who later installed the lockers. Small world...
OK! End of the story. Turned out the truck had a loving owner and wasn't left for dead. So although I didn't acquire it, the story has a happy ending. It ended up being a really nice M925, albeit buried in snow at the time. Believe it or not, relating this story later landed me a connection...
I've typed out a letter I'll stick in the mail to the address introducing myself and expressing interest. My biggest assumptions are that it lacks a title and it's in nonrunning condition, but we'll see. Worst case, it's a good parts truck.
