    Rustystud ?

Old thread but I would also like to talk to Rustystud about some technical stuff and I dropped him a PM. Been over a year since he last logged on. If anyone has his contact info I'd sure appreciate it, he is another one of "those guys" with a wealth of knowledge.

    65 Kaiser M35A2 project starts

It’s a strong engine, 60lbs oil at idle and makes next to zero blow by from the cap and slobbery tube! That’s great advice David, I’ll have to pass that one on to the kiddos I’m picking up parts from local steel soldier David Wymore to install proper military fuel pump and he also has a used...

    65 Kaiser M35A2 project starts

Well a new morning brings new ideas, ditching the cheapie inline pump with proper military one. I couldn’t even get 1 psi from this one yesterday. I was given a military pump for free and it just needs a bottom plate which David Wymore has for me an hour from here. Now just have to find a hanger...

    65 Kaiser M35A2 project starts

Well got check valve back in booster pump. Plugged over pressure valve at filter head and put a thin washer in the overflow valve spring on the side of the hydraulic head. Pressure was 40 psi idle and I had to stop at 1500 rpm because pressure hit 75 psi. Took shim out, tested with no shim and...

    65 Kaiser M35A2 project starts

I’ll check all of the above tonight and give you a report if it’s not too late there. If you can think of checking anything else let me know! Is there anything in the hydraulic head that could stick and keep pressure at zero?

So if the fuel is leaking past the check valve the only place for that boost pump pressure to divert to is pushing fuel in reverse back to the tank (fighting against the electric lift pump guess who will win). Which is the reason why on shut down I can hear the electric catch back up and begin...

    65 Kaiser M35A2 project starts

I ran the pump and little to no debris came out. Here’s yesterday’s video of the pressure drop. It’s very repeatable. When I shut the truck off it takes about 10 seconds to hear the pitch change in electric pump regain prime. So when the booster valve sticks open I believe it was pushing all the...

Here’s the offender….I BELIEVE. The fiber gasket fell apart but it still looked like it was sealing. Hard to figure out what exactly was stuck open here.

    65 Kaiser M35A2 project starts

Thanks to Floridianson for the phone tech advice! Checked fuel pressure at bleeder port and got 30 psi idle…..so far so good…..revved up slowly to 2000rpm, pressure climbed to 40 then 50 and engine started surging like it does at which point fuel pressure dropped to ZERO!! It stayed at zero...

    65 Kaiser M35A2 project starts

I did turn the fuel down a few turns because it looks like it was up too high as it came to me ( 8 threads showing, backed it down to 4). It was pretty smoky before but I hadn't driven it really to see if turning it down made any difference. The FDC was bypassed already and I just feel like...

    65 Kaiser M35A2 project starts

Primary filter looks great, redid some fuel fittings, good flow after secondary filter, diesel is definitely old but still smells like diesel. Still no change, struggles to maintain steady rpm under no load in front yard, surges and fluctuates. Out of curiosity I held the pedal near 2000rpm and...

    65 Kaiser M35A2 project starts

Transfer case shifter shaft seal is puking oil (yes vent is clear), enough that my 20 mile journey yesterday sprayed the rear axles a little. So new shifter shaft seals inbound. Oh, and just sitting in my driveway the front left tire went WOOOOOOSH and flat. My fault for using these old, free...

    65 Kaiser M35A2 project starts

I'll crack the primary open after work and have a peek, thanks Mullaney! I suspect the bottom of this tank could be full of junk too. Just based on how rusty the canisters were when I cleaned everything out. Literally had an inch of muck in all 3 canisters and the filters were so plugged they...

    65 Kaiser M35A2 project starts

These filters have less than 1 hour run time on them, it surely can’t be them? My CUCV did all this exactly down to a tee. But only when we took it off-road. We thought it was fuel foaming up and airating. Finally dropped the tank one day and found it rust plugging the sock! The previous owner...

    65 Kaiser M35A2 project starts

I believe it’s the hydraulic head. I’ve read the tolerances are so tight that if you hold the quill shaft in your fist for 10 seconds it shouldn’t even fit back into the head. Mine did with almost no hesitation and I clearly remember seeing swirl wear marks on the quill shaft. I will confirm...

She rolls!! Victory was bittersweet, brakes are excellent. But it died several times after it warmed up. Lots of surging and trouble going over 40mph. I’ve narrowed the possibilities down to a worn hydraulic head or something wrong with the governor/advance assembly in the injection pump...

    65 Kaiser M35A2 project starts

Tomorrow should be her maiden voyage! Planning first short trip across town to see the grandparents. Then it’s off to see the YPG tanks to really stretch her legs for a good 40 minutes. Ordered a geared torque multiplier nut remover for my roadside tire kit. Spent 3 hours power washing under...

Good eyes Dave, those are the AVM lockout hubs. I need to get my spare pumpkin finished and installed after summer ends. No mas golf club for me, working with Cocopah tribe outside of town doing maintenance supervisor stuff. It’ll look equally nice sitting on the reservation parking lot I think!

    65 Kaiser M35A2 project starts

New motor mounts, bled brakes, adjusted clutch down (wasn’t releasing throwout bearing fully), clutch and brake rubber bumpers replaced, mounted new front tires and spare. All that’s left is install radiator, fill with coolant and hit the road this weekend. I drained the oil 1 more time...

Aftermarket radiator project for the M35A2 series

I'm almost done getting my 1965 Kaiser on the road. I had a spare radiator that came with the truck laying around. It looked great, but leaks terribly. So I disassembled the metal frame from the core. The plan is to take one of the following 3 tractor radiators and adapt it to the stock deuce...
