    M56B1 questions

Yes, very rare those peroxide rigs were. They were essentially an M37 with a custom assembly in the bed. However, all the M56 trucks were the long wheelbase jobs, same as the M43 ambulance.

    M56B1 questions

Few realize all M56 G741-series were custom builds on limited contracts. The M56 was built by Dodge as a cab & chassis, then shipped to the respective builders. The contact truck, the R2 crash wagon, the X? wrecker, and other rare ones are examples.

New Deuce owner and need help badly

Starting any balky Diesel engine with a squirt of gas is a lot easier on it than using ether. Cheaper too... I use a dollar store plastic pump spray, a couple shots in the intake usually gets it going fine.

Wire Loom vs Wire Wrap question

Non-stick tape is a bit hard to work with, keeping it tight as it is being wrapped. Then again, it is what they used in original MV looms. Made in custom factories by the hundreds. Scotch 33 is easier to use, as when you stop for whatever reason, it stays in place. The adhesive they use won't...

Wire Loom vs Wire Wrap question

Split loom sucks...holds in dirt & water...messy. Retape it from end to end, done.

Military surplus vehicle inspections in Nevada

By chance did you source your Mutt there in Nevada, perchance in Vegas? I saw several sold there at the SOF conventions back in the 90's. Just curious.

Power steering options for 251 cid

Power steering in an M37 is a luxury, IMO. The one in my avatar had an 800lb Detroit in it, with big Goat 11.00-18 tires and never felt the need for PS. Even my wimpy little wife drove it just fine...

    M56B1 questions

The one here (maybe was, now) in the Phoenix metro came from the Guard base in a DRMO auction in the mid-80's. Legend has it, it was the last G741 in inventory there. It still ran great, so it wasn't to be offed. So some enterprising individual drained the oil, ran it, and when it locked up...

    M56B1 questions

The welder drives off the rear drive shaft, IMHO. There is one in the local MV club, not as nice as yours. Dennis

    Replacement canvas or vinyl covers

I need a Vinyl (Herculite) top & curtains for my M54A1 5-ton, 14' bed. The usual $ is around $400, maybe you can beat that.

    Iron butt relocation ride!

Driving my 5-ton for years, I've found the only thing cops want is to pass you. Blow the scales too, the military doesn't stop for them.

    Jerry cans

Ah, those are water cans. I thought you were referring to gas cans.

    Jerry cans

The offset lever type originated in Europe, over here long after the M37 was out of active service. I bought an entire containerload of Russki ones back in the 80's, sold like hotcakes. The pros: They pour better without a spout than ours. The cons: Seasonal temperature differences will...

Air Hydraulic Cylinder Assembly Rebuild Kit Questions

Aren't there 3 types of 2.5 ton 'airpaks'? Don't forget that in the G749 series GMC trucks. All things considered the form & function is very similar to those in the G742 Reo trucks.

    MADIS MkII

A Marine Air Defense Integrated System (MADIS) Mk 2 C-UAS platform during testing at Yuma Proving Ground 09.27.2023 Cruzin' the Creosote in style, eh?

How to safely throw a perfectly good 5 ton truck out of a plane

Years ago, at a Military Appreciation Day held at the Yuma Proving Grounds, they were going to demonstrate a LAPES, or low altitude pallet extraction of an M113 APC from the back of a C-130. This in front of full grandstands... All was fine and well as the plane was about 3 ft off the ground...

    Low Range and Reverse

Ball hitches are nonsense, pintle hooks and lunettes rule. I've seen twice where ball hitches failed, causing a lot of problems. Military pintle jobs just don't fail. Besides, it keeps others from wanting to borrow your trailers.

Operation: Gertrude. Kendelrios M715 restoration thread

A tip from a guy that has painted a LOT of military wheels: If they still have tires on 'em, use a bunch of old playing cards as a masking between the wheel and tire. They should overlap a little, and being thin, they stick in that gap just fine. Let 'em dry, and use them again... And you...
