You might check each battery by them self . I turned off my m52a2 one day changed a tire went to restart and same thing . One battery went bad I was only getting 12 volts . I though I had a locked the engine because I had left the fuel pump on .

A PTO mounted to tight will give you shifting problems just something to watch for . After you are sure everything is good copper washers under the 6 nuts on the PTO will seal gear oil drips.

Replaced one axle boot with non zippered boot on my M52A2 axle seal was also replaced. I made this tool and it worked good it made the drum and hub easy to slide on and off and spin the hub when adjusting the bearings it stopped the hub from turning when tightening the bolts on the drive flange .

You can use the same grease you use on your 5 ton or 2 1/2 military trucks wheel bearings .I have two large trailers that use grease .A seal leaking gear oil will get you put out of service by the DOT . With grease it's not going to leak .

If your chains have latches that are hitting take them off and just use a hook it's slimmer .when fitting chains on my m52a2 it fit better you only have about 1 1/2 inches to work with. I have not been on the road with them .

Yes you are turning the right way .the stud and the nut may have a L on them that could be covered with paint.

For filter mounts check truck salvage yards older Mack trucks have cast iron filter mounts for secondary and primary . Trucks with Detroit Diesels used aluminum filter mounts. You can use the old filter number to buy new filter.

Sounds to me like a broken teeth on the pinon and bevel gear or the bevel gear and the drive gear .
