    Complete 936 newbie

The issue is that in low range it automatically engages the front axle. The t-case is a weak spot and in reverse the output gears can separate and crack the case (under heavy loads). Attached memo on the issue. Instead of installing the interlock kit as the memo indicates most folks disconnect...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

If you have a 676422 or 676603 then they came with both J1708 and J1939 communications protocols. AFAIK older units did not. The newer units were black boxes instead of green. My truck came with a 676422 and three bad hub seals. I got it working for a minute then the controller went dead...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

I'd love to put one im my M936A2 but where the heck did they go? The transmission tower, CTIS and winch tower are really in the way. Meanwhile I got some used CTIS ECU's and looks like my system is back in action. I'm never going to find the 90psi ECU looks they are gone all snapped up so am...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Finished replacing the third (of three) CTIS hub seals and got the system working. It was really cool for a couple days until the ECU went dead aua

    Wrecker Swing Gearcase Rebuild Notes

So you might be wondering what the heck could cause such damage? What happened? Well the picture here tells the story. At some point in time, probably prior to RSMS in 2012, this thing was full of water and it sat there. And sat there..... and sat there.... With this amout of pitting on the worm...

    Wrecker Swing Gearcase Rebuild Notes

Reassembly of the case is pretty simple. The bearings are a slight interference fit or "crush". In fact the double rollor will slide in to the case if the same temperature but if warmer will not. This concerned me a little so I used some Loctite 638 retaining compound on all the bearings (50ml...

    Wrecker Swing Gearcase Rebuild Notes

So there were two gears left that I needed and this is the bulk of the cost of the repair. I needed item 12 and item 19. Probably the biggest "win" in the parts department was on item 12 which is NSN 3020-00-262-7572. I got quotes on this from $2,200.00 up to over $7,000.00 from the NSN folks...

    Wrecker Swing Gearcase Rebuild Notes

Right. Now the money stuff. I needed gears..... Once again I recommend eBay because why not? As luck would have it I found item 7 for $122. No kidding. Wish I could have found the others that cheap! I hadn't actually thought I could afford to replace it but at that price absolutely. Picture of...

    Wrecker Swing Gearcase Rebuild Notes

Now it was time to look for parts (see attached from TM -P). Obviously I needed all new bearings, gasket, seal and drive gear. Note that there are only two types of roller bearings item 6 (qty 3) and item 10 (qty 1). Some quick looking you'll find that item 6 is an SKF 309 and item 10 is a 5212...

    Wrecker Swing Gearcase Rebuild Notes

Disassembly of case is fairly straightforward. I used a cheap Harbor Freight 12 ton stand up press I inherited with my place. If one needed they could build an adequate tool with lumber or unistrut; but the cheap press works great. A bearing splitter like the one in the picture was handy for the...

    Wrecker Swing Gearcase Rebuild Notes

Posting this to document some information that may come in handy to others. Item rebuilt was on a M936A2 but should be the same for other platforms as the bed and crane are similar. Synopsis: New to me M936A2 rebuilt by RSMS in 2012. Sat until 2016 when bought by previous owner. Stored inside...

    M923A2 CTIS Problem

Well I fixed the right two rear hub seals. There was shredded rubber fluffy crap in there. I assume the seal. I changed all the fittings over to JIC. This required 4 new 3/4" 45 degree NPT/JIC adapters and tube ends. The tube ends were expensive but at least they are longer, have more grip and...

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Certainly I would be interested in a 2.5 and 5 ton set. I have three CTIS seal sets on my M936 that need replacement at the moment. My 2.5 ton will be here about summertime so I see both of these tools being a good investment for me. Like the axle sockets for the trucks. I would also be...

    Thoughts on Boyce built trucks.

Boyce is in a different subset of business than a lot of surplus guys here. Boyce is in the "we build them the way you want them" business not the "cheap surplus" business. They are not the best deal. What they are is for guys that don't have time, or don't want to make the time, to build one...

    Another FDC bypass question

450 to 500 is just fine. If you're using Centigrade. That would be 842 to 932 F. Of course it will be the only metric aspect of your truck..... :)

    M923A2 CTIS Problem

I recently got around to making the tool I needed to test wheel seals per the TM each wheel. It's not totally necessary to plug the QRV off but be advised the QRV will not close until you take the tool off so with the assembly under 80psi pressure you need a firm grip or accidents will happen...

    M936 crane winch gearbox

No lip sealers or roller bearings for the drum. Wow. The bushings are bronze 932 and the gaskets are neoprene. As far as I can tell you're supposed to grease it A LOT and it just..... leaks. By design. Only two lip seal on the whole thing item 7 at the end of the worm drive shaft. Plain gaskets...

    M936 hydraulic filter question

Side note from department of "that's kinda weird": the gear description from the NSN is it's made from "copper alloy overall". Huh. Screams sacrificial gear to me. The helical gear is steel 8620H. That's a case hardened 80 ksi material. My worm gear may be OK (I'll have to inspect). So whomever...

    M936 hydraulic filter question

It's the swing gearbox. Swing motor also has issues I disconnected it with the lines attached and ran it: rattles one way smooth the other. So it's off to a local shop for a rebuild. I'm pretty sure this is the issue of the loaded/unloaded. For all I know it sounded and behaved like crap...
