Transmission fluid get heated by the engine. Plain oil was used due to availability. I assume that your Sunoco was synthetic? Heat is what destroys transmissions typically. In the South, Transyn Allison or equivalent is best.
Having gone end to end on my truck and seeing the cracked hoses and leaky seals all over the place, I would not recommend this type of driving. I am not sure, but I think the vents for the axles went under water. Took water in??? Hope he checks his pumkins this Halloween.

Yep, total junk. Causes birth defects too. No power, throw-away block, oil lines kill the engine, overhead is a nightmare...
