Good question. Leaks of gear oil into the CTIS system is a clue. I found this in mine. If you are in there, you might as well change them, as they are not that expensive, just a PITA is all.
Look at how a branch from a tree sweeps across the truck front, and it will make sense. You want to keep things that sweep from connecting with the windshield with any degree of force.

I would say this as well. When you have one fabricated, make sure that there are adequate protections for that windshield. The ones I have seen thus far do not do enough. When I build mine it will be better thought out than what I have seen. Windshield can be hard...
The ABS truck will not necessarily stop at a shorter distance, BUT it will stop straight typically. In fact, stopping distance may even be longer. All it does is pulse the brakes to stop a lock up at the wheel. Concur with comment about experienced vs inexperienced drivers.

This is exactly what I am saying. You can do it yourself (and save thousands) , BUT you must spend hundreds of hours scanning every tid bit of information in maintenance, let alone doing the work and paying for the tools and parts. This why I outlined the failure points of the 3116.
