Are you getting higher temps on the outside of the drum where the shoes make contact? Or are the higher temps in the center where the bearings are? After just flipping the hubs, I'm suspicious you may have over torqued the bearings or there is a problem with one of them.

Is your FDC bypassed? Filters clean? Perhaps you are losing your fuel system prime somehow. Even with the lift pump dead the truck should still start with a little more effort.
