I drive my 5 ton about every other day. I took my 6 year old to kindergarden in it last week. Yesterday I drove it to the hardware store 1 mile away to buy a 5/32" drill bit. Then back to buy another one when I broke it! I had to move my mini van, my Camery and a pile of brush to get it out.
It's a military spec laptop. I used to build parts for these. It is extremely tough and impervious to Electro Magnetic Interference or EM pulses that could occur from jamming equipment or certain types of explosives or electronic counter-measure devices.
When I bought my 5 ton, the engine shut-off handle had been disconnected at the engine side. (the distrubutor I guess). So everytime I drive it I have to dump the clutch in 5th gear to shut it off. This raises somequestions.
1) Is this hurting my clutch or engine?
2) Is there a common reason...
Well I ordered a rear axle tune-up kit for the 5 ton axle from Boyce Equipment, it has an outer seal, a flange gasket and an inner seal they call a "pinion seal". Those guys guys at Boyce are some of the best customer service people I have ever worked with. I will document the procedure step...
Best advice ever! My wife took a little convincing at first, now she wants to learn to drive it and take it to the beach and run up and down the sand hills.
Awesome [thumbzup] Feels great. I remember just a few weeks ago bringing mine home for the first time. Didn't want to get out. Enjoy, drive it for any excuse you can think of. I took my 6 year old to school in it today. She felt like a little rock star getting out of it in front of all her...
Very nice! My heaviest load so far, has been 7 kids and 4 lawn chairs. I should add that there were at least 25 pine cones back there too adding to the load along with some pine needles and paint chips fron the troop seats. It didn't strain too much or squat the rear end, but it was very slow...
Sweet truck! My 5 ton grinded a little in 4th and 5th also for a couple of miles. Then it went away, right after I discovered that the 3-4-5 gear shift pattern was all backward. Now it shifts fine! Such a coincidence.
So on my new 5 ton, I thought the brake cylinder was leaking. Turns out it is 90 weight gear oil. That means the axle seal, I can deal with that.
My question is: Can I drive it that way for a while as long as I make sure the oil level in the diff is full? Or is it something critical that needs...
Actualy yes. I live in a nice neigborhood with people all around me. I keep the 5 ton on my RV pad right next to the house. I guess it qualifies as an RV. I am fortunate to have a 4 car garage for my other vehicles. 2 of them still have to stay in the driveway though. My neigbors are used...
Unfortunately I have a history of this. When I decide I want something I always go for the biggest and the best, the whole "being able to afford it" thing doesnt seem to come into play much. But I will learn everything I can about it. I have a '31 Ford street rod and this thing is even funner...
Not sure about the bumper, it's getting fixed as soon as I can get a couple guys here to help. Kind of looks silly. The winch was a nice bonus, the PTO box and shaft is missing though. I should be able to find that stuff. What I really want is the bow and canvas kit for the back end.
Thanks guys! I will start looking through the resouces. Brakes are a pet peave of mine. Actually with the windshield down and the stack off it will fit in the garage. No room left though.
My first MV ever. I love it more than I thought I would. It's a blast to drive, although a bit noisy at first. A new muffler fixed that. I will post a picture of the muffler addition later. I have no experience with them but I am a fair mechanic. I have a leaky wheel cylinder on the left...
