Assessing tire condition- NDT bias tires

Thanks for that. My steering tires are the best in the group.

Assessing tire condition- NDT bias tires

I tried searching this but came up empty. I'm not an expert on bias tires with tubes and I'm still learning about their peculiarities. Visually, how much checking (cracking) is acceptable before you decide that a tire is unsafe? Bear in mind that I don't haul commercially and my truck is...

    Blower Switch

You don't say what kind of truck. I'll guess that it's an M39 series. Manuals are here: TM's for the M39 Series 5-ton | SteelSoldiers You can find the part number in the -P manual. My switch is totally different, it's a toggle. I have an M813.

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

Happy Valentine's Day, you apes. Have you shown your girl some love? I died laughing when I stumbled upon this PS Magazine.

    M813 leaking front axle

@timgc78 Here's a video that shows how things come apart and go together: Changing 5 ton ROCKWELL axle boots and seals on my AM General! Resealing steer axle on M813a1! - YouTube @simp5782 actually has a better video showing a slide hammer setup that he used to remove the seal but I can't find...

where can i get a 5 ton crew cab?

The M35 and the M809 series trucks used identical cabs (except for the hood which doesn't apply in your case). This means that you don't need two "5 ton cabs." You can find an old deuce and a half cab to combine with your 5 ton's cab. If you're trying to make a crew cab out of a 939 series...

    M813 leaking front axle

Well, is it thin, tired grease or is it really gear oil? Grease is a boot, oil is an axle seal. Is the boot torn? I had a torn boot and the grease was thin, ran out under heat and left a "sling" pattern on the inside of the tire. Something you can try- Wiggle the axle vent and see if it vents...

    Simp's M920 build thread

Ha, that's great! When you say "race track" do you mean for testing your trucks or are you running faster things around this track? It doesn't look paved.

NHC 250 Turbo Conversion in M923

Wow, you're nuts. :) I wear hearing protection in my M813 and I haven't even taken any long trips.

    Simp's M920 build thread

That's one of the things that blows my mind. Not only does he make repairs and upgrades correctly the first time, but he's FAST. He's totally violating the Venn diagram of "cheap, correct or fast. Pick two." I think he even still has all of his fingers.

What have you done to your 5 ton this week?

I've sorted through all of my tires and finally have mounted a complete set with decent tread on the truck plus 3 spares with full tread. I just stuck with the ordinary NDT's of stock size. I installed a 24v - 12v converter to power small loads like a radio or cell phone charger. In the M809...

    Coolant test strips

Well shoot. It looks like I performed the test incorrectly in a few ways: 1. Test coolant that is above 50F degrees. My engine was stone cold and the coolant was well below 50F. 2. Test from the radiator petcock, not the tank. 3. "Discard kit if nitrite test pads of unused strips have turned...

    Coolant test strips

I completely flushed the coolant system in my M813 a year ago. I got the water coming out pretty clean. I replaced with ordinary green coolant (per Wes's advice IIRC) and then I added the proper amount of SCA. For fun, I dipped a test strip into the overflow tank this weekend and the SCA...

    M813- Wire #40

That's it, #27. I was able to see a "7" on the tag. I moved the step down converter over to that wire. It's live all the time when the battery switch is energized. It's on a thermal breaker, I've also wired a fuse on the 24v supply to the converter and the CB and the cell phone cord also...

    M813- Wire #40

Ha, you're a genius. I only set the switch on "dim" and plugged my CB in. The CB is *very* old and has been sitting in my garage for 11 years. It wasn't working properly in the truck (dim lights, low output TX) and I attributed that to it being damaged from sitting in the garage for over a...

Simp's M816 Bringing back from the dead thread

LOL...that's just mean. I'd never ask to borrow one of your trucks. I would ply you with copious amounts of rum and cash to tow me home if I broke down though.

I didn't measure the voltage. I'll check it out.

    M813- Wire #40

Sure that'll work. I just hate cutting into the wiring harness at all so I used that free connector. I just finished hooking everything up and it works fine. I just need to mount the adapter plug.
