Gimpy,
Personally I wouldn't worry about that little slit at all. Like you said, you have tubes in it. Also, the tread on those things is very thick. I had some mounted for a bobbed truck recently and I was talking to the guy about having a spare. He started laughing and said it didn't...
drive it
I don't drive mine every day, but I love to drive them. Don't listen to all the hype about how hard it is to steer, that's BS. Yeah, it amy be hard to get into a paring space, but as long as you are moving at any speed it is not difficult to steer.
I drove one of my Deuces 200...
costs
I would think you would be better off buying a take-off cab tub. I have several from $200-350. Then you would get a ton of spare parts; doors, windows, dash components, switches, valves, hoses, ...
Shipping would be more of course, but it may not be that bad. I shipped a set of...
wrecker
Richard,
I just got in a new wrecker yesterday, a 1955 gasser made by International Harvester. I know they get terrible gas mileage, but I don't have any plans for it outside of my yard.
I am trying to decide what to do with my old wrecker now. It is a M543A2 multi-fuel...
answer
Yay!!!! I finally know the answer to something and ten other people haven't beaten me to the punch.
"The X prefix indicates that the truck was produced before formal standardization (type classification) of the M818 model in 1971."
Same trucks, X just means earlier models...
Rod,
Sorry I didn't get to talk to you more. Thank you very much for picking up my trailer at Mobile and brining it up for me. If you ever need any Deuce parts, just let me know and I will make you a good deal.

joint types
This won't help with how to identify the different types, but it helps one to understand what they are. This picture was given to me by a rock crawler dude who buys axles from me, I forgot which one, sorry.

jack dropping
I had a Deuce fall off two bottle jacks today. They fell sideways. I was taking the front axle off and had been under it for hours. I knew better, but you know how it is when you gotta get something done. I saw movement out of the corner of my eye and twisted clear as it came...
I live just south of Chattanooga and had a guy from Michigan call today wanting to buy one of my Deuces. I don't want to do it myself. I also found a dump truck up there I would consider buying if I could get it home reasonably.
My Deuce is driveable, but would rather it be towed in case...
I just bought an expando van and it has an I-beam, poles, top bracket, and hoist roller assembly in it. Wreckerman tells me it can be erected at the back of the truck to lift things up into it to be worked on.
Does anyone have a picture of an erected hoist assembly for an expando box van...
BFR,
I have tons of Deuce parts from trucks we have parted out, about half a dozen motors pulled and various project trucks.
Come and see me in Ringgold, GA.

On the M105 I cut the welds loose and it slid out of the frame. That way it will slide up in the truck frame and give you more welding surface area.
Get redthegreen dog to take a picture of the M105 tongue he got from me today and it should be abundantly clear.
I don't remember much...
