Yet another engine oil and diesel fuel thread

Any name brand engine oil should be good for the multi, and is no doubt miles ahead of whatever crud the army was buying in bulk back in the day. Im a big fan of Napa's house brand, its made by Valvoline and a good price. Zinc has been a concern for a long time, but I feel thats really a bigger...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

I'm interested to hear your results, especially since you mentioned "after bouncing down the street for awhile". It should respond very quickly, within a second or two of the revs coming up for the first time.

Aircraft landing lights on headache rack

That reminds me of a dimmer version of Fords new LED headlights...

What did you do to your deuce this week?

Ive got a one wire in mine, and about 50% of the time, it doesn't start charging right on startup. As with some of my other 1 wire converted machines, it only takes a little blip of the throttle to get it going, maybe 1k engine rpm for a second or two, well within the capability of even a cold...

    Oil & lubrication

I manage (and wrench on) a municipal fleet with well over 100 road going rigs, and our duty cycle is about as bad as is possible. From idling 8 hours a day, to plowing snow without shutting off for 30+ hours straight we've done it, and do it again every day. a few years back we traded in an f350...

New Paint, what are your thoughts?

Love the solid color look on M35s, myself. My rig is painted a WWII-ish darker green (by the previous owner) and I really like it that way.

What did you do to your deuce this week?

Ive had some trouble with Optima, ever since they got bought out a number of years ago. We had put them in a couple of backup generators with long storage times and tight enclosures but they failed in less that 2 years, so we junked them and went back to off the shelf Napa's. The old optimas...

    M35A2 engine flush

I've used Marvel, Rislone, and Diesel fuel all with good results in engines over the years, usually in cases of obvious neglect, or chasing the notoriously bad hydraulic lifters in Packards. That being said, I don't think any sort of flush is necessary unless you see signs of a major buildup...

Rear Hub Service and How much Grease to use.

You can load those hubs up fairly full, just like a biggie sized trailer bearing. you do want to leave a bit of room for thermal expansion, but you definitely want loads of grease in there. IIRC I ended up using nearly 1 lb. of grease per hub. jeepsinker has a great series of videos on youtube...

    M35A2 C-Turbo

perhaps try firing it up with the downpipe disconnected, you'll know right away!

    Un-Preserve Multifuel

I second the idea of spreading some oil through the top end, and also recommend you pre-lube the turbo (if it has one). Pull the oil feed line off and put a few ounces through to make sure the turbo doesn't spin up while dry. I feel these are extra important steps on an engine thats known to...

    Pulling front hub problem

That hub should wiggle and the outer bearing should pop out, regardless of any brake wear. With that being said, at this point I would make sure those shoes are in all the way just in case. While it doesn't look anywhere near bad enough in the picture, it almost sounds like the inner race spun...

    Whistler Turbo Equivalent Parts

Im really interested to see how that turns out. Those Holsets can take a beating. I wonder if a stock size HX would work, or if the exhaust housing would be too small for the larger displacement, but lower tuned LDT. Im pretty sure the wastegates on those can be ported somewhat.

I have to drop the fuel tank

Even with a really good cleaning, if you've got slime now make sure you dose your first few post cleaning fillups with biocide. Algae/ slime/ diesel bug (whatever you want to call it) is tenacious and good at hiding in tiny cracks and crevices. Change your filters too, before you get her going...

Making a deuce a reliable daily driver? Help make a to-do list?

For daily use, I would add a remote brake reservoir to keep tabs on the brake system, and perhaps swap out the turn signal flasher for a civvy one, or at least carry a spare oem part. I would also inspect the often overlooked oil in the steering box. I second the addition of a backup camera...

Two and a half tons and lifts

I cant say about the difference, but my 3.5 (or maybe its 4?) ton Napa trolley jack is plenty to lift a complete rear axle up, or one front corner. Frankly, it could probably pick the whole front up, but I didn't bother. Thats how I did my complete hub service a few months ago. For cribbing, I...

Portable or Bluetooth speakers in a deuce?

Since most of us have and carry cordless tools, maybe one of the tool brands jobsite radios would be a good option. Most all of them are bluetooth, ruggedized and can run for quite long times on a decent sized tool battery.

How not to treat your deuce

I had a feeling that coat-tail riding dope's vids were going to show up here. I've known guys like him, guys who need to prove their "worth" or quantify their "fun" by destroying their own stuff. Its not a mentality I can identify with.
