Repairing/restoring/rebuilding the original is often preferred and can be way cheaper than alternatives.
IF someone wants to replace the original direct-drive starter with a modern gear-reduction starter, one needs a 39MT 24V 12 tooth starter...
The plates and pins work, I can attest to that. Contrary to what one would believe, the pins should be inserted straight down, NOT (as one would instinctively do) "against" the pull direction (like tent pegs). The reason is that high pull forces would cause the pins to act as a lever that breaks...
Wow, the base frame is made from impact-resistant super strong steel while the shock-absorbent hangers allow flex in case of ground contact. The tank body is a tough polymer that resists rock chips. And we all know that impacts happen at the bumper and not underneath the truck. Should, against...
The other nice thing about having crane hydraulics set up....it is so easy to simply put a changeover valve into the hydraulic line to power the dump bed instead of the crane....you know....the dump bed kit that you are going to install..... ;-)
If it runs as well as it looks you have indeed made a ton of progress! It looks sharp. Can't wait to see it with the crane. I bet, as soon as you have the puppy mounted, the truck will see non-stop service around the property.
I appreciate the insightful answers and start to feel like a grumpy curmudgeon. I would not put any effort into getting something running or working BEFORE I buy it.
Once, I worked a day and a half on a vehicle I wanted to buy, got it running and driving and then the seller "changed his mind"...
If I can't hear the engine start and run, I'd only offer what I'd pay for a non-running truck. Reason is, I am assuming all the risk in this transaction. That offer would be half of what the asking price is.

The horn wire should exit the column through a conical rubber plug (that likely disintegrated or was "weight saved" and omitted by Soldier B). Without it, the wire chafes at the edge of the column.
Grey/black is actually a good looking colour scheme for the truck. I do not want to be that guy in oncoming traffic that gets "reminded" by two landing lights to lower his high beams! That is totally what I would do with them!
@Dipstick I dig the flatbed and my issues would be
- can't let that super nice wood become wet in the rain
- can't let that super nice wood get scratched by things placed on top of it ! Maybe a gym bag or a soft sided suitcase!
