    M1028 help

The component which failed is a diode, the member/vendor who makes new units sold by Hillbilly Wizard says it is a 24 volt Zener diode. It only functions as a freewheeling or snubber diode to clamp harmful voltage created by the solenoid when it is deenergized, protecting the transistor. Any...

    M1028 help

Here is the behind the TM technical info: It has correct placement for the thin orange wire on the large output lug of the solenoid. Identified in TM as .5 mm ORN-503B. Wire identification is by diameter in mm, then color, hyphen circuit number ID and any branch is a letter suffix. The TM...

    M1028 help

The diode is IN4004 or similar. Resistor 5100 ohm, 3% tolerance. I would desolder the diode carefully to test if it is the failure. Ohmmeter should be open one way, .3 to .8 volts on diode test the other way. If short both ways, it was the fault. It toasted the 5100 ohm resistor too...

    M1028 help

Please view this video. Insulate all 4 terminals on the solenoid once fixed. And always disconnect both batteries before any electrical work.

    M1028 help

That is the output diode, not transistor. The transistor is the black block with three wires and the screw on the heat sink. It could be fixed but anyone with the skills would charge $180 plus postage. This damage is usually caused by incorrect connection, easy to do as half of the terminals...

    M1028 help

The controller card will show heat damage to the output transistor if bad. Pull it and examine. Improved version can be bought at Hillbilly Wizard, pricey but well designed.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Dialed back on the M1031 SECM governor adjustments..my load test is a trio of 3600 Watt water heater elements. In 1.25 gallon bucket of water, it went from 86°F to boiling in 2:30. 150 seconds. 37,500 BTU/hour. Discounting heat loss to the bucket. It needed the load so I could upset the...

    M1028 help

Probably the solenoid welded itself shut. Could be the control card if the output transistor failed short. The solenoid main lugs should have 24 volts measured at the top or resistor side with key on, engine off. The lug with three orange wires (2 large, one small) should be 0 volts except...

    M1028 help

What did you do to it? Which wires did you move or connect? The firewall resistor bank is a voltage divider network to drop battery voltage to around 12 volts when the glow plug solenoid is engaged. In doing so, it heats up, approximately the same heat energy is dissipated in the resistors as...

    Glow Plug Resistors smoking?? Help.

11 year old post resurrection? The resistors will get hot if all is working correctly, they function as a voltage divider. Wire wound resistors are designed to have nearly constant value, glow plugs are typically positive temperature coefficient meaning resistance increases. This provides...

Sorting out new M1028 Starter and vacuum hose questions.

MPLS sounds like the twin cities of Mini Soda, you know St Paul and Mini Apple O'less?

M1008 idling good but engine shut off driving.

4267 does not use a flex ring, that is the original 1984-1985 IP for a CUCV. The US military superceded this with the 4520 and eventually, 4521 which is a JP8 upgrade. I've yet to find a CUCV specific model using a flex ring. It is possible one could have been fitted, every Stanadyne approved...

    M1008 rear brakes

DOT5 silicone or DOT3 glycol? Mixing the two is very bad. DOT5 lasts much longer, doesn't absorb water, doesn't corrode, doesn't eat paint..

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Popped the cover off the SECM generator main connection box to see if I can make some magic happen. Magic like reconnection to produce 120/240 split phase when needed. It will fit a 4" cube. Looking good. The generator is a 12 lead, the two connection schemes are low wye (stock) and double...

M1008 idling good but engine shut off driving.

Injection pumps before 1985 may have a flex ring which breaks down, plugging fuel return check valve. Fuel must flow, otherwise the plunger chamber cannot fill when transfer pressure equals case pressure. When engine is cool, two solenoids are energized, one is external and holds the throttle...

Sorting out new M1028 Starter and vacuum hose questions.

GP resistors are fine. Resistors only drop voltage proportional to current, with glow plug relay off, there is zero current so zero voltage drop. The two port rubber plug on the vacuum regulating valve is no longer made. Direct connect with Top Tube To Transmission. Diode is normal, iirc...

M1031 PTO Governor Control - Factory Technical Manual

I may need to back off the governor adjustment. The Lina MAC generator voltage regulation uses output current to induce rotor excitation current. This compounds the excitation since output current is AC, rotating twice as fast. This gives the generator great current capacity for starting...

    CUCV M1009 electrical issues

So the two prong plastic plug on the side of the alternators had a jumper from the voltage sense to the excite wire? That meant the regulator was getting voltage at all times. Could cause rotor winding to overheat and fail, in addition to discharge of the batteries.

Location of STE-ICE diagnostics module in cab for tachometer hookup

There is a small plastic case where the tachometer brown wire terminates. Full circuit ID starts with wire diameter, .8 (mm), then color (BRN) hyphen then circuit ID (104) and finally insulation type (SXL). SXL is thick wall polyethylene. Wire diagram descriptors are on chapter 2-2 of the...
