Might be a good option: epoxy

If it is an epoxy paint it will be faded and yellow within a year Epoxies are essentially polyamide or nylon plastic which is subject to discoloration from UV. Surface tolerant epoxies exist but they shed layers as an ablative coating which gives them a chalky appearance.

    Fuel storage and filtering

We've been running R99 instead of diesel 2 in my fleet for a year now. It has messed with our sight glasses and centrifuges due to lower density. We have not experienced any microbial issues. Microbes live in water and eat hydrocarbon fuels at the interface of water and fuel. Minimizing the...

    Fuel storage and filtering

Water is the enemy. Keep your tank clean. Run the fuel through a filter before you put it in the tank. Run the fuel through the same filter as you drain the tank. Use valve to ensure the correct direction of flow of fuel through the filter.

    M1009 Brake Disk R&R

No need to get into the differential. Once you remove the lockout hub then the rest of the job is the same as a 2wd truck. The hub and rotor come off together once the outer wheel bearing is removed. You'll have to hammer the studs out to separate the rotor from the hub. I suggest replacing the...

Why Did M1008s Come with NP208 vs NP205s

It is a ring and pinion. It's a bevel gear with a helical cut. The centerline of the pinion is aligned with the axis of the ring gear. Maybe spiral bevel gear is more prevalent? Truck differentials mostly use hypoid gears. They are similar but the axes are offset. The hypoid gear has some worm...

Why Did M1008s Come with NP208 vs NP205s

Remember that automatic transmissions also have gears. ATF can lubricate gears. I always ran ATF in my dirt bike gearboxes despite them specifying gear oil. Twin Disc specs engine oil in their transmissions. As robust as the NP205 is, I would suspect it would operate on ATF just fine. I...

Why Did M1008s Come with NP208 vs NP205s

The NP205 transfer case may not need a pump in the same way that a manual transmission does not need a pump. The chain drive transfer cases operate with a much lower oil level and may not be able to splash lube effectively.

Why Did M1008s Come with NP208 vs NP205s

If you aren't in 4wd every day, the 208 performs better in 4wd, wears out faster, and is cheaper to repair provided you didn't break the case. The case will break when your front driveshaft slip joint seizes up, it's pretty tough otherwise. It may drop into low on you at about 150k miles. It...

JEGS Reproduction Aluminum Radiator - any experience?

If you can afford to recore the original do it. I had a tube fail on my original. I replaced it with the Spectra brass unit. It literally weighed half of the original. It lasted about 2 years in a daily driver. The level sensor never worked very well and it didn't fit the truck well. I replaced...

    Front lockout on M1009

Got any parts for Dana 60 hubs? I need one selector and believe I need those thin washers inside. I had a king pin pull its threads which allowed the wheel to lean in and out which pulled on the axle shaft and bent up those washers. The hub still works, it just isn't right.

    Parts for 86 D30 M1008

The D in the VIN does indeed mean diesel. It's there to dictate the emissions schedule the vehicle must comply with.

    Blowing Bubbles

I think these heads are expected to crack. They're relieved between the valves so they crack in that region where it doesn't do any harm. I see this on large turbochargers. It's called stress relief cracking. I really like the idea of MLS gaskets. Quadstar Tubing claims to have a new version...

Proper grounding for generator as a component of off grid solar / house system.

Grounding is intended to provide a low impedance path for fault current to cause a magnetic trip of a circuit breaker. That means your ground bus bar, wherever it is needs to connect to the neutral. At ONE point only. That is all. Grounding is that one point where the ground bus bar and...

My buddies Ham Shack back up power.

If you have problem bolts that are prone to breaking add a spacer under the head of the bolt and use a longer bolt. Guaranteed to solve your problem.

M-37 exhaust and intake manifold design

Helicoil kits used to be $25 but gained on Timesert considerably recently. However, I prefer Helicoil due to the variety of alloys available (not from your local hardware store). They have Nitronic 60 inserts that prevent galling when working with stainless steel fasteners and they have PTFE...

M-37 exhaust and intake manifold design

I'm a Helicoil fan. I think Timesert uses their high price as an advertising point... However, in this special case where the threads need to seal I would suggest the Timesert with sealant. My favorite general purpose sealant is Loctite 577 but that may not be accessible to everyone. Don't use...

    Parts for 86 D30 M1008

As a kid in the 90's I remember the diesel truck owners idling their truck at the fuel pump. I asked my parents why they thought they were special.

    Parts for 86 D30 M1008

Maybe diesel owners like to feel special and NAPA is capitulating?

Ever seen a 6.2 balancer break?

I did drive my M1008 20 hours in one shot. I kept it as close to 65 mph as I could. Stopped for fuel and to load a dirt bike.
