I still get noticeable whine in my VIC-3 but it's less severe. It whined when I had the 60a alternator installed and still now with the 200a. There must be some good filtering...
Those are for tracked vehicles that have heavy loads switching on and off that inject noise into the system. They never put them in HMMWV's because you don't need them.

The stub shafts just pull out of the diff. I think I used a slide hammer. IIRC the bearing comes out with it. I replaced one about 5 years ago and I don't remember the details, but I do remember it being pretty easy.

Nothing is wrong with plumbing the winches in series.
The forward and reverse solenoids already have the bypass ports in series. Adding the second pair won't change anything. The solenoid either directs the flow into the winch or bypasses back to the power steering tank. When no winch is active...
My truck is a 1986. The fuel tank does not hit. The late models do have a slightly different tank but for the reason I mentioned above.

Just a few points having installed a 4L80:
The gas tank does not need to be changed to install the 4L80. The new style tank hits the driveshaft parking brake rotor so requires the new style parking brake installed if you punch a hole in your old tank and can only find a new one to replace it...
Check the ball joints and radius rod ends. I know I have to replace mine when I start blowing thru tread. I replace the offending joint and the tires stop wearing. Simply out of alignment will have similar symptoms because when the joints get loose the alignment wanders all over the place.
