You operate the winch from in the cab.
It should be a 2 person operation.

Start with your injectors. Intermittent misfiring can be cause by them.

Trunnions refer to the center pivot point between the rear axles.
Dogbones are part of the rear axle suspension components. The ends of them have rubber that is known to fail over time. If one were to fail completely, it will allow the axle to move forward or rearward uncontrolled.
When I hauled mine in my 8’ bed(Silverado), I would back it in and park with the front wheels on 4” blocks. That would allow my tailgate to close with the foot basket above the tailgate.
As for the engagement lever, I often slowly pull out on my cable a bit while holding light hand pressure on the lever until it engages. Remember, the engagement dogs only engage every 180 degrees of drum rotation. Since your cable is bound, you will need to rotate the input shaft several turns...
I suggest that you do NOT use a new shear pin to run the winch in reverse to unbind your cable.
I suggest you get the engagement lever on the winch into free spool. Then pull the cable out.
If you put the pto in neutral and rotate the driveshaft by hand(pipe wrench, or bar through the yolk)...
