When things are working correctly, one will hear the same sound when shifting into first or reverse. If it isn’t disengaging the Sprague unit when one drives damage can be done. More likely you will feel a dragging or scuffing sound if the Sprague is not disengaged.
The 800 series trucks have an air line that feeds the transmission with air and two lines that run from the transmission to the transfer case. When one places the transmission into first or reverse poppets are engaged that sends air to the transfer case locking the truck into six wheel drive for...
I’ve put more than a few more miles on the road and mostly it has been waves, smiles or at the fuel stations questions. However I did have on encounter with “Barry Fife” one and two.
A couple of years ago I went to a friends place on the water for 4th of July. Normally we just park in the grass...
The first thing I would check is the condition of the batteries. Even though they may take a charge they may not hold one. If you charge the batteries fully and have or can borrow a load tester, that can tell if the batteries a still good. I like and have a tester that allows testing of the...
I’ll give this one a try. Yes I have heard of this. The book calls for .010 at 10 o'clock and 2 o’clock, .020 at 8 o’clock and 4 o’clock. That is in a perfect world. The first thing to check for when installing new brakes is does the lining “fit” in the drum of the truck. By that when the shoes...
The standard for 35’s, 54’s 813’s etc. is two air connections on the rear. One is the emergency side (should be painted Red) and should be on the right side. The other is the service side (can be painted yellow or blue) and should be on the left. There are shut off valves for both sides. When a...
It could be some kind of improvised setup for an A-frame. The legs of the A-frame would go on the shackle mounts and instead of connecting the support cable to the pintle hook maybe someone tried the tailgate. I would think the tailgate would bend, but know knows. The only other thing I can...
I had the stitching on one of the 818s fail. I took it to a shoe repair place. On all of the vinyl tops that I have the plastic piece is in three sections so it can be folded.
Bjorn,
Do you know what size and thread count the old bolt is? If it was me, and I knew the size of the bolt I would just drill the old one out as close as possible without hitting the boss threads. Then I would take a cape chisel to knock out enough of the old bolt so as to as to get a tap...
I don’t see any unusual wear on either the bearing or the race. The bearings only run on part of the race and the wear pattern looks normal to me. Since the drum isn’t getting hot that indicates that the brakes aren’t dragging. My guess with out looking at it first hand is that the bearing is...
I would pull the inspection cover on the transmission and check the throw out bearing for slop. It could be something as simple as a bearing retainer clip loose. Beside it will give you a chance to give a quarter turn on the grease cups on the inside of the housing that lube the cross shaft.
I had two bolts break like that in one of the 818’s. A friend showed me a neat “trick” to remove broken bolts. He took an acetylene torch, the kind that runs off a B tank and heated the bolt. Then he took a candle and stuck it up against the broken bolt. The wax was drawn into the threads. He...
The FSC (Federal Stock Class) 2530 is for vehicle brake, steering, axle, wheel & tract components. Can you get the measurements of the linings? Need the width and length. And what might help is the size of the drum they fit. If you take a lining and stand it on edge on a large piece of paper...
Don’t forget the lock washers and have some extra grade 8 bolts for the axle flange in case the bolts are stretched. I always change the lock washers and check for bolt stretch, thinning where the threads begin, every time I pull an axle.
The standard 105 brakes, this applies to the one with one air line. When one applies the brakes air is fed from the service air line, can be painted yellow or blue, goes to a diaphragm that is connect to a rod that in turn operates the hydraulic master cylinder.
From that point it is just like...
