    a question about a trailer I won

If memory serves me, that is the M172 that is/was at Havre De Grace, MD. It has been there for about two years and had been sold around a year ago. The previous buyer failed to pick it up so it was re-listed. It was missing one of the bearing caps on one of the axles, no I don’t remember which...

    Trailer ID

It looks to me like a modified M128. It has the same double frame like the 128 and 129. This one didn’t have any windows so I think it started out as a 128. It also has 24v interior lights like a 128 or 129.

WTK: Front Left Hub Leak, M52A2

As already posted the first thing to do is to determine what is leaking. If it is a leaking wheel cylinder you would see low fluid in the master cylinder. If the boot is torn grease would leak out on the tire. If the inner axle seal is leaking gear oil from the differential that could be what is...

    m105a2 payload

The 105 as with most military equipment is underrated by a wide margin. There are several reasons for this. First off unlike commercial equipment that is build to carry as much as possible but stay under weight, i.e. tractor trailers are limited to 80,000lbs. The military doesn’t have those...

    Air in fuel?

The return line(s) go back thru the fuel selector valve. When the valve is in one position it feeds and returns the fuel from and back to one tank. When it is in the other position it does the same for the other tank. I would only by pass the return if there was no other way. The pump draws more...

    Air in fuel?

This is one of those issues that the Cummins and the 818 has, or any of the 800 series with a fuel selector switch. The 800 series does not have an in tank fuel pump so it is very unforgiving of any air leaks and can loose prime every quickly. First off any time one removes the fuel filter...

    Transmission Fluid...NEED help please advise

One of the quirks of the M series is that they tend to leak water at the windshields. That water will run down the shifter and into the transmission. Without looking I would say that is what has happened. If you like the truck buy it take it home and change the transmission oil. An old trick to...

6TLs versus big box mart replacements

Just my 2 cents worth on this topic. There are only three major manufacturers of batteries in the U.S., Johnson Controls, Exide and one other I can’t remember at this time. They make most of the batteries and just re-brand them for most everyone else. There are only two companies that make lead...

Transmission swap, what to have on hand ahead of time?

You didn’t post where you are doing the transmission R&R whether in Richmond or Atlanta. Besides the usual tools, rags, oil, cleaning things if you have access to air it will speed things up. I like using a transmission jack for when I have to R&R a transmission. The first thing to do is chock...

    Aberdeen parts

Yes, David I’ve banged around with the rig enough to hopefully chase the hitch hikers away, but at least I don’t have any helicopters hovering over my “wildlife”. I’m doing the final load out on the trailer. I’ll have a few boxes of Extreme cold bags if anyone is interested in them, $70.00 ea or...

    Bad Alternator

If you have no power to the gauges I would look at main power switch. Then power to the panel. A quick test of the alternator is to check the voltage at the batteries with the vehicle off, it should be around 24 volts. Then check with vehicle running, should show around 28.4 volts.

    Aberdeen parts

If anyone is interested in an M-59 field range complete with accessories or some Extreme cold sleeping bags NOS still in the bag I can load some in the trailer.

    abnormal tire wear

One can get that wear pattern if the toe-in is off. If the front tires are toed-out to far it is like driving on the inside edge of the tread. The front of the tires should be about 1/8” closer than the back. The measurement and adjustment must be done under load; the tires have to be on the...

Need M105 wiring conversion to composites

The tail lamps on your 105 are the earlier style, sometime called cat eyes. The composite lights are just a later style. There isn’t any compatibility problems with the type of light that your have. I suspect that your problems are probably a bad bulb, poor ground or maybe a bad wire in the...

10w oil is what is called for in the book. Hydraulic oil of the same weight works also.

    Batteries 101

I have always been told and have added straight water. And since electrolyte is simply sulfuric acid and water and when a battery is being charged the water is broken down into hydrogen and oxygen there is no reason to add acid since none is lost.

    Batteries 101

A battery is filled with electrolyte that is sulfuric acid. When a battery discharges the sulfuric acid breaks down into among other things sulfates. The sulfates coat the plates and eventually the battery “shorts” out, actually it insulates the plates so they can no longer accept a charge. The...
