There seems to be some issues about batteries and charging issues that keep coming up. First off the lead /acid i.e. wet batteries are really storage batteries. The charging system is designed to recharge the batteries back up after starting. The charging system is not designed to charge dead or...
As already posted the air valve(s) are leaking. You may want to try starting the truck and placing the transmission in first or reverse and see if that stops the air leak. The valve seals don’t like cold weather especially when they get old, kind of like the vehicle owners. After the pressure...
Split rings aren’t hard to put back together, just takes a few things to remember. And no I don’t have pictures. First as already posted install the tube in the tire and inflate enough to keep in the tire, I like to have just enough so I can get the tube flap in without trouble. When...
Thanks for the credit. Wedges make breaking down a split ring a lot easier than anything I’ve ever used, short of a tire machine. It doesn’t take long after a little practice; just ask CGarbee how long it took to change the tire on his “new” kitchen trailer.
One can pull a semi trailer with a dolly behind a 54 without a problem, that’s how I took one of the 129s to Aberdeen two years ago. If you use as M197 5 ton dolly that has 9x20 tires as David said it will ride a couple inches low in the front, but that is not a problem. However you have to be...
First off the emergency stop is just that and is meant to be reset by opening the hood and turning the valve. Yes you can move the stops on the cable to be able to reset from the cab if you wish, however the 800 series trucks have an electric solenoid for shut off.
As far as fuel issues, there...
That seems like to much work. When I pull a front hub I just remove the axle flange and pull the bearings, remove the tire, wheel drum etc. as one unit. A dual/ wheel jack comes in handy when working on these things and they aren’t too expensive if you look around.
It definitely saves the back...

"That one on the tan 105 looks like it would fit a deuce. It has buckles for when the sides would be rolled up."
I think that's what I said earlier about it fitting a deuce.
A 101 will fit in a 105 without a problem, of course the top and bows on the 105 have to be removed. I towed a 105 with a 101 in the bed behind my K3500 without a problem. The GL people loaded it with a forklift and I strapped it down with a couple of 2” ratchet straps. It is a little top heavy...
If you have an alternator the regulator should be internal, actually it is on the back of the unit. If an alternator is not charging the voltage that one would get from the output is what the batteries are providing. One simple way to check for output is to see what the alternator is putting out...
The air compressors on these trucks pretty much all have oil blow past the rings into the air system. Since the air tanks are at the bottom that’s where it ends up. Just normal to the truck and as a side benefit it keeps things from rusting.
David, I have gotten as high as 11 MPG when I bobtailed up to Havre de Grace to pick up a generator trailer. And it’s been as low as 6.6 towing a 127 and grossing around 50K. I usually expect 8 to 8.5 when bobtailing it depends on traffic and weather. I have 11:00 X 20’s and try to maintain 2100...
The transmission has two air lines that send air to the transfer case to actuate the Sprague unit in the T-case. When the transmission is shifted into first air is sent in one line, reverse the other. When the shifter is in any other position the air is released and the Sprague is left in...
Just my 2cents worth on this topic. There are only three major manufacturers of batteries in the U.S., Johnson Controls, Exide and one other I can’t remember at this time. They make most of the batteries and just re-brand them for most everyone else.
There are only two companies that make lead...
I had a similar thing happen with one of the 818s. Two of the bolts that hold the fan hub bracket broke off and the fan shifted forward into the radiator. I picked up a new radiator from TNJ Murray out of Delaware. http://www.tnjmurray.com/specials.html is the link for the 800 series; the site...
