30W will work just fine; I use Shell Rotella 15W-40. I get it from Sam’s Club in the 55gal drums. All of my trucks have 15W-40 stenciled under the hood.
The cover on the Trans comes off very easily; just make sure it is in neutral. As far as a gasket, you can cut one out or use sealant. My recommendation is a gasket maker from Permatex. It is called Right Stuff, product number 29208. It comes in a “kit” with three tubes and a baby caulking gun...
I had a similar problem with a CJ some years ago, “horrible wobble in the front end... have to all but stop before it settles”. The previous owner had rotated the tires using the unused spare in the swap. The result was that the two front tires were different heights. With a live front axle the...
If you remove one of the lower bolts that hold the CV bolt shield on and oil comes out that is a good sign that an axle seal is leaking. Not hard to fix, just everything is heavy and greasy.
The only thing I could add is that the NHC-250 has O-rings that seal the cylinder liners to the block. When they start to leak there will be water in the oil. If the oil has a milky white color that usually means an O-ring is leaking and the engine will need and inframe. Other than that the...
If it has S Cams, the shaft going to the brakes may be rusted in place. You may try pulling the pins on the adjustment yokes and spraying some penetrating oil on the S Cam shaft and as already mentioned beating the drums with a very large hammer. If that fails you may have to pull the drums.
I just tighten the bearing nut till the wheel can’t turn, rotating the wheel as I’m tightening. Then back off the nut till the wheel turns freely. There is a certain “feel” that just can’t be described. When reinstalling the axle flange bolts make sure to check them for stretch. It can usually...
The lock nut is 4 ½” 8 sided. It is the only one that will need a socket. The inner nut has a stud on it that can be tightened with a screwdriver and a hammer. The outer nut locks the lock ring down and has to be very tight. Most heavy truck part stores should carry them.
The “newer” extended life coolant isn’t compatible with the old brass and copper systems. For an old MV it is better to stick with the old “green” stuff.
You’re going to find having a M127 around very useful, kind of like have a big pickup. I have three of them and am always using one. If you can find a pallet jack to keep in the trailer you’ll never regret it.
The M172A1 has a reversible king pin. One end is the usual 2.5” and the other size is 3.5” so it can be towed with the larger tractors. Just remember a M172A1 is 115 1/8” wide and can be a handful in traffic.
If is an M197 total weight is around 2880 lbs. The weight on the lunette is 390 lbs. The front leg folds up, but the two pins that hold it in the raised position may be missing. A couple of ½” bolts about 12” long can substitute. It will help if you have a high hitch and a high lift jack will...
I’d get on the interstate and roll. If you are not commercial you don’t fall under DOT rules and don’t have to stop at the scales. Just don’t put a sign on the side of your truck saying widget trucking.
If it was a perfect world everyone would run brand new tires that were made yesterday. The reality is that a lot of tires on these trucks are recapped. DOT requires first run i.e. new tires on the steering axle. Even though most of these personally owned trucks doesn’t come under DOT rules it is...
The tire failure could have been caused from several reasons. The tire may be old/ dry rotted, bumping a curb, or in this case maybe running a tire with to low an air pressure weakened the sidewall. After you brought the pressure up to spec. it just gave out. That’s why it is critical to run...
