Thanks Karl.
I spoke with a firm here in town yesterday that specializes in marketing and web services. I have known the owner and one of his associates for many years and I know they will shoot straight with me. I think I'll be able to get the necessary changes made in a stepwise fashion at...
Thank you for all of your kind words of support. I didn't start this thread with fundraising in mind, but I really appreciate the donations too. I know times are tough for a lot of folks out there so your generosity means a lot to me and the rest of the SS family.
Some have asked why the...
Hello everyone,
I understand that a lot of you have questions about this site's lack of direction and apparent lack of leadership. I want to address those issues and I would like to start off by apologizing for my absence from the site and the obvious lack of progress around here. I haven't...
Ron, it made it into my garage last month, but I haven't really touched it since then. I have got to get started on it because my wife wants the garage back. I filled up a 2-car garage with the HMMWV, the Cummins on an engine stand, the engine hoist and all of the assorted spare parts...
Thanks Ron. The cover arrived in one piece. I think the MT643 was the trans that was originally connected to my 6BT in the bus. It's a pretty tough trans, but it's a big unit and there isn't a direct mounted t-case as far as I can tell.
I wish I could say that I have started on the project...
Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm pretty fond of a 6.2 clatter after having a 1009 CUCV as my daily driver for 10 years. They sound best when the cold advance is on. With that said, the sound of the 6.2 had nothing on my '95 Dodge Cummins Ram with a straight pipe. That was log-truck-beautiful...
It would be a great trans for the humvee if it had overdrive. Sorry the rig is still taking up space in you driveway, Captain. Hopefully, Brian will get it soon. I need to call him for a status update.
Thanks for the info, Chris. I was thinking about using a manual start/stop cable on the dash deuce-style. I didn't know 24v was so prevalent overseas. That will help when looking for oddball conversion parts.
Thanks! It should be fun.
Great info, Ted! I didn't know that all of those different TCM's were used. Do you think the ones for the ECV with 6.5L TD would be the best match for my Cummins setup?
That Baumann Optishift is pretty nice. I do worry that it's not a sealed unit. The humvee is going to see some pretty hardcore offroad use so the TCM needs to be vibration/shock/water resistant. Do you any of you A2 HMMWV guys have any input as to the durability of the military TCM?
Here's one more transmission option: Option 5 is find a 998A2 wiring harness, A2 TCM, 4L80E, NV242HD, and an A2 shifter. Maybe I'll swap the front clip out for an ECV unit to give me some more room for my cooling stack and intercooler? Hmmm...
The body lifts I have seen for the H1 in kit form are around $600, so I plan on making my own. I'll probably buy a generic 2" kit from eBay to get the pucks and then fab my own fuel tank brackets, etc... The SAE #2 adapter was used to hook up a big Allison trans in those Ford school-buses...
Matt, it's the wife's LR3. She loves it. It'll get the boot when the humvee gets here though. Sorry honey!
That's true Lanty. I don't think I have ever seen one for the NV4500. It seems like I saw an H1 somewhere with a NV4500 in it and the owner had done some serious heating and bending...
Here are some pics of the 6BT. I sure hope I can squeeze that mammoth air compressor in there :) The Ford valve cover emblem and engine data plate will really confuse folks. The engine came with a SAE #2 tranny adapter on it with saddle mounts and a front mount. It's a beast! I'll be...
Thanks Westy! ;)
Lanty, I actually thought about a standard swap just to be really different, but the NV4500 shift tower would be too far back. I suppose I could run a ZF6 since the shift tower is about 4" closer to the engine. I'll settle for a built slush box though.
Thanks Ted. As you know, it has been a long time coming. I am going to run 24v. The 6BT has a 12v 130A Leece-Neville alternator on it right now and it looks to have the same case as a 24v 100A alternator that I have in my garage. I am thinking about running a 2-man Avenger hard top on it...
Thanks Paul. I am excited about it too. I've done a few engine swaps over the years, but this will be by far the coolest one and the most involved. I'll be sure to take lots of pics as usual.
