    1994 M998A1, Rebuild in Indiana

Congratulations! Nice to see another Hoosier having fun. With all those parts missing, especially the transfer case problem too, it sounds like a whole new powertrain from a surplus dealer is in your future. Then you can just build around it. Bulldogger

    Waters intrusion into passenger insulation?

Mine was the same on pickup too. A few jabs w a screwdriver down low and it's fine since. Bulldogger

Attempting spindle seals soon... any protips?

I used a four tooth spindle socket from another model. Had to just touch the teeth with a dremel to get them right. It only engages four out of eight notches of course, but it works fine since they are not high torque nuts. Bulldogger

What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

I'm one of the ones who posted that product link and have had no trouble with mine since about April Bulldogger

Shut hmmwv off and 10 seconds later wouldn't restart?

Cleaning up wires and grounds seems in order. Glad she's running again. Bulldogger

    Humvee won't start

You can lessen the hiss of the Cadillac valve that's in front of the washer reservoir by loosening the hose clamp that holds it to the body and putting a piece of rubber in between, then re-tightening. Common complaint. Bulldogger

    M998 Wiring "jumper" questions

Well, you're near a scrapper there in Wilmington if I recall correctly, so at least you might be able to get the parts you need quickly. Maybe a whole new power plant and keep the one you have as spares? Bulldogger

Shut hmmwv off and 10 seconds later wouldn't restart?

You definitely have some kind of short, with the heater fan able to run and the stop/run switch in Stop. The wait to start light will often NOT come on if the motor is good and hot. That isn't necessarily a fault to investigate. The Brake light should be on if the switch is in Run and the...

Attempting spindle seals soon... any protips?

Once the half shaft and spindle are out you can rap the seals out from the opposite side with a long punch, carefully. Be very careful not to damage the seal mating surface. A little caution and care should be enough. I drove all of my larger seals in with a hunk of 2x2x4 cut square. The smaller...

    HMMWV Grounding Kit Install

If I recall correctly, that is only a 1/4" bolt thread. Not as big as it looks on the head. Bulldogger

    Restitch Windows

I guess I am fortunate, or just very patient. I simply bought a glover's needle and some outdoor heavy nylon thread at the local fabric store and hand stitched my surplus door's window zippers back in by hand using the original holes. Just go one hole at a time. Once you get in the habit, and...

    Half shafts ?

The Technical Manuals and Parts List are on the site: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?78861-TM-s-for-the-M998-series The parts list takes a little getting used to, as far as reading and searching, at least it did for me, but it's all there. Bulldogger

    HMMWV 6.2 Fan clutch question

It seems odd for both the water pump and fan clutch to go out at once. Have you tried pressurizing the fan clutch w 90+PSI air? I think of them as fairly simple, and hard to break. Sorry to hear about the water pump. That is annoying to get off. Common advice here is to bite the bullet and...

    Thermostat for 6.2

Mine reads as you describe, but I suspect it's not as high, also like yours. I've been meaning to get a new sending unit. BDGR

    Turnover trouble

Do the easy thing and disconnect, inspect, clean and reconnect all connections involved first. Start with the battery box, assuming you haven't already touched that area. Most MVs are not "turn-key", they need refurbished nearly everywhere and periodic revisits. It's not Whether or not to...

    HMMWV Grounding Kit Install

The grounding harness many of us did, or will, install is a SUPPLEMENTAL harness to the existing factory harness for the most part. While some argue that it should be of a diameter and gauge that can handle the full discharge of two 24V deep cycle batteries, I went much smaller. I found wire...

    M998 Shifts Early

I second Katavic918's description. Mine will shift as late as 28-30MPH but only if I have the go pedal mashed to the floor. I posted somewhere about it myself after getting my beast running and road-worthy and was told the same thing. In my case giving it an Italian Tune up seemed to help a...
